GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter and guitarist Madison Cunningham headlined the Turf Club, in St Paul, on October 15th.
Turnout for the show was pretty terrific for a Friday, with S.G. Goodman taking the stage around 8:30pm. This was her first time here, and although she only played seven or eight songs, mostly from her debut album Old Time Feeling, she filled out the time nicely as she tends to ramble between songs.
We learn that she’s “legally obligated” to say her name seven times, as her manager thinks it’s good for name recognition. And as promised, she would continue to say her name throughout the show, including during the band introduction: Nick Harley on bass, Matt Rowan on guitars, and Stephen Montgomery on drums.
After her preultimate song, “Big Girl Now” was played, someone in the audience shouted out, “You’re S.G. Goodman!”, for which she thanked them and said, “I’m gonna count that as number six.” And, yes, she did ended her entire set by saying her name a seventh time, “I’m S.G. Goodman!”
As part of the promotion for the Madison Cunningham concert, the show was recorded and broadcast on local radio station The Current… but as you can see from the setlist, it’s missing about half the set.
The show was also special, for the fact, that it was Madison Cunningham’s post-birthday show (her birthdate was Oct 14).
Cunningham seemed eager to play live shows again and finally seeing her fans around the world again, looking at the filled dancefloor.
The Turf Club stage may be too small for her band, as there was only a small space for Cunningham, in the center, as she’s flanked on the side by various pre-tuned guitars on racks.
In the middle of her set, the band left to take a break, while Cunningham played a couple of solo songs, such as “All at Once”.
The encore song was “I Close My Eyes”, the intro track from her 2017 album Love, Lose, Remember.
Cunningham’s latest, Wednesday EP, is out now via Verve Forecast.
