Vegan icon, artist, singer, and music producer, Mia Gladstone opened the show. She’s accompanied by Eli Navvy who handled the background music and “pushes buttons”, and self-described himself as producing “sh**** ambient music.” Navvy’s self-deprecating comment led to Gladstone correcting him, “He makes ambient music, but it’s not sh****.”
You get the impression that Gladstone is all about self-love and self-empowerment, based on hearing her speak on stage and the messages in her songs, like “Feel It”, “Go”, “Grow”, “Don’t Look at Me”.
Highlight of the show was when Gladstone asked everyone in the audience to take out their cellphone and turn on their flash light… except for one guy who had only a banana.
Most of Gladstone’s set were from her Cycle/s EP. To fill out the set, she played some unreleased tracks “Baby You’re So Damn Fine”.
Gladstone ended her 30-min set with “EGO”, which ended in a medley of previous other hooks of “powerful” and “beautiful”.
Kiefer is joined on stage by his band, drummer Luke Titus, additional keyboardist Jonathan Huber, basist Andy McCauley, and alto saxophonist Lenard Simpson III.
Kiefer’s jazz instrumental style of music isn’t for everyone… but for those who loves jazz this is a great venue to see the band jam. While it sounded great, I felt the alto saxophonist was so overpowering that it drove many of the songs.
Kiefer’s latest release, When There’s Love Around, is out now on Stones Throw.
