Opening the show was New York’s 79.5, who played a mix of funk, disco, and a bit of jazz thrown in for good measure. The band is lead by Kate Mattison, and she’s joined by Isaac on flutes and sax, Antonio on drums, Sanchez on Keys, and Lola on vocals.
They played their Big Crown Records debut single, “Terrorize My Heart”, near the end of their brief 30-minute set.
I feel as if Durand Jones & The Indications, who formed in 2012, are part of a new soul wave, popularized by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (who also served as session band for Amy Whinehouse), Charles Bradley, and so many others that helped shaped the genre.
We first caught wind of the band in April 2018, when we said, “All indications are clear- this is a band to watch— Hillaryville, LA by-way-of Bloomington, IN neo-soul singer-songwriter and band, Durand Jones and the Indications made for a refreshing “soul evening’ at a recent sold-out stop at the 7th St Entry in downtown Minneapolis…. Neo soul needs a new champion- we miss Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, and locally Sonny Knight – all older stalwarts given a musical rebirth later in life, in careers that made them more popular than ever, but unfortunately all lost recent health battles and are no longer with us. Thankfully, some in the younger generation have picked up that torch to continue on, mixing the timeless traditions of classic soul, with a nod to today’s climate and sounds- enter Durand Jones and the Indications. ”
At that time (in 2018), with only their self-titled album released, the band played the majority of the record, but throwing in a few cover songs (Hard Road, Curtis Mayfield, Michael Dixon & J.O.Y., Smokey Robinson, Sunny and the Sunliners) to make for a full headliner set.
By the time the band came back in April 2019, now with their sophomore album American Love Call, the band relied less on covers, and even doing away with their brass section: “The five-piece has a new album, American Love Call (Dead Oceans/Colemine Records) that maintains its ‘70s-esque soul sound, but like Marvin Gaye’s What ‘s Going On, lyrically turns both more inward and also outward, in examining the world around us. Jones and band (Aaron Frazer-drums; Blake Rhein- guitar; Kyle Houpt-bass; Steve Okonoski-organ) didn’t bring the horn section we saw them with last time, but the Indiana band and singer were tight enough, that the extra brass wasn’t needed.”
The band had to take a year off, no thanks to the pandemic… but we were lucky enough to catch the band at The Bottleneck in Lawrence, Kansas in Feb 2020… right before COVID.
With time spent on recording Private Space, the band resumed touring in September 2021… and again, we were lucky enough to catch them live at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on a Tuesday night.
With very few tickets available, the venue was packed full of masked fans, eager to sing along.
Early in their set, after a good workout dancing and singing, singer Durand Jones stepped down to let other sings with 79.5’s Isaac playing flutes.
As you can see from the setlist, the majority of the set were songs taken from their latest album, Private Space, including “Sexy Thang ”, “Love Will Work It Out ”, “Ride or Die”, “More Than Ever ”, “The Way That I Do”, “Witchoo”, and “Sea of Love.”
Durand Jones & The Indications new album Private Space is out now on Dead Oceans in association with Colemine Records.
