Fountain City Con returned for its fourth installment at the Community Center in Lenexa, KS for its second one-day mini show at this expanded 9000sq ft. location. Following county virus protocols, masks were optional for anyone already vaccinated, hand sanitizer was plentiful, and showing your proof of vaccination at the door, even got you a free comic of your choice.
Inside, the open room was full of dealers, an Artist Alley section of locals, more nationally known talent along the back wall, and wide aisles to maneuver through the crowded room, without any trouble.
Show guests included legendary artist Bob (Shadowman, Avengers, Batman) Hall; penciler Chris (Nameless, Batman Incorporated, Die!Die!Die!, Officer Downe) Burnham – a longtime Chicago-based mainstay who recently made nearby Overland Park his new home base; Aaron (Wonder Woman, Damage, Justice League) Lopresti; writer Dennis (X-Men, Spider-Woman, Jean Grey) “Hopeless” Hallum; and artist Stephen (Sea of Stars [w/Hallum], Hellboy and the BPRD) Green.
In addition, the Con commissioned the visiting artist to combine their talents on a benefit “jam illustration” that was sold in limited quantities and a silent auction and pre-show event, donated funds to Hero Alliance, the industry charity that helps fellow creators in need.
Despite the summer heat, crowd size was healthy and steady all day, with most in a good mood to have shows like this again, plenty of buy/ sell/ trade action, and fun for all ages. The show was very-comic selling-centric, with no cosplayers, panel discussions, or unrelated vendors (which was fine by us).
The good news for area fans is that the show has already announced its return on Saturday October 23rd, with guests that will include artist Scott (Flash, Avengers, ADAM.3) Kolins.
