Then I will change my name to Smith”

Neo soul band Durand Jones & The Indications and 79.5 will stop by the Fine Line Music Café on September 14, 2021, touring in support of their forthcoming album Private Space (Dead Oceans in association with Colemine Records).
We first saw Durand Jones in April 2018 and wrote, “Neo soul needs a new champion- we miss Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, and locally Sonny Knight – all older stalwarts given a musical rebirth later in life, in careers that made them more popular than ever, but unfortunately all lost recent health battles and are no longer with us. Thankfully, some in the younger generation have picked up that torch to continue on, mixing the timeless traditions of classic soul, with a nod to today’s climate and sounds- enter Durand Jones and the Indications.”

Caroline Smith first came to our attention in Sep 2008. Back then, billed as Caroline Smith & The Good Night Sleeps we described the music as Americana or folk.
By the time she released her Half About Being A Woman album, we were surprised to learn that she sounded like old 60s soul with some rhythm and blues. It’s that soul sound that got her on stage with Charles Bradley, you know “The Screaming Eagle of Soul”, in Dec 2013.
In 2016, she moved to Los Angeles, and took on a new stagename, Your Smith.
We saw her at the Fine Line, right before the pandemic shut down the city, in Jan 2020 and said, “The second to the last song on her set was a cover of Martha Wainwright’s “Bloody Mother F***ing A**hole.” The song is special to Smith, as she previously mentioned in 2019, “I have been covering it in my set and night after night I watch how powerful this song is; How deeply people need it and relate to it. It has been an absolute privilege. Thank you, Martha, for giving me my anthem for when I’m feeling powerless and lending your words when I am lost for my own. A truly magical song makes you feel like it was written just for you. I am a survivor of sexual abuse and reclaiming my power is something I actively fight to do every morning I wake up. I will always fight self-doubt and feeling present in my own body. This song makes that fight a little easier for me. If you’re in need of a song that makes you grit your teeth and clench your fists, I hope this song reaches you like it did me.”
Your Smith is returning to the Fine Line, post-pandemic, this July 24, 2021.
