Singer/songwriter Gillian Welch released “Happy Mother’s Day”, in celebration of the holiday.
You might recall that Welch is part of David Rawlings’ band Dave Rawlings Machine (who stopped by Minneapolis in 2015). At that time, the two worked together for their seventh collaboration album Nashville Obsolete.
Rawlings and Welch is also the team behind the independent record label, Acony Records, which came together in 2001 after they discovered a cache of demos and home recordings from the early 2000s.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us are in isolation from our mothers, so Welch wrote, “We can’t always be with the ones we love, but that can’t stop us from saying ‘I love you.’ I wrote this song one May when I was far away and couldn’t be with my mom on Mother’s Day. Then I called and sang it into her answering machine when I knew everybody’d be sitting down to eat. Here is the original home demo for the song, recorded on a portable reel to reel.”

Richmond, Va based indie rock artist, Emma Garell, recently released her single “Mother May I”. The music video premiered in Ghost Cult Mag on May 1st, 2020, which editor, Keith Chachkes, compared the sound to “Lilith Fair”.
Garell said, “‘Mother May I’ is a very personal song about how I feel about the worst day of my life last year as I was hit with a sudden separation from that joyful child that I once was. My band came together for some playful tantrums, a few explosives and a pile of childhood memories.”
