Varsity Theater marquee Grace VanderWaal Setlist
|
Los Angeles, by the way of Wisconsin, Patrick Martin opened up the show, playing his debut single “Cinema Love” and “Stranger Nights” and other songs from a forthcoming debut album.
You can tell that he was interested in music at a very young age, and influenced by classic rock bands like Fleetwood Mac and Allman Brothers.
He ended his set with what sounded like “Hunger Years”, and based on the audience’s liking to his sound, he could be an artist to watch for in the future. The unfortunate thing is that he shares a common and there are many authors or similar-sounding names out there.

It’s obvious, based on her many, many tween/teenage fans (and their parents), she’s built up quite a fanbase here.
VanderWaal is still young, so she basically played almost everything from her debut album Just the Beginning, plus throwing in a few cover songs (Billy Joel’s “Vienna” and Rex Orange County’s “Best Friend”).
It’s pretty amazing that she still had so many songs and ideas in her, even though she was always apologizing for trying to play new songs… including “The City” from a forthcoming EP she has in the works.
The new songs are good and shows a sign of maturity, and hopefully she’ll be returning back in town soon. For many young pre-teens, this was their very first concert and it sounded like it’s a great experience for them.

Grace VanderWaal at Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (06 Sep 2019) |
Grace as always was great. The crowd started out a little subdued, but warmed up after some cute prompting from Grace. She used her original song Florets to get the crowd pumped up by dancing around and praising everyone for their participation by singing along, which is something Grace is known for. I was in the front row-standing only,no seating-but was surrounded by 3 and 4 foot people, so it was kind of hard to move without sticking your elbow in some kids face, so I felt a little restricted, not Grace's fault. Grace's audience was very mixed, from young girls with parents to men and women in their 20's to us older folks. The band are real pros! I had a moment with Melissa Dougherty on the street earlier in the day, she was really nice and is an excellent musician.I was disappointed because I tried to find out about a Meet and Greet. The Venue had no information when I called, saying that Grace's people arrange that type of this-fair enough, but it was not widely publicized and frankly I would have loved to eet her and the band. Lastly, Tina and Dave, Grace's parents were quite accessible as they walked around the venue and back and forth to the bus parted outside.Great show, great and talented kid and I would go again.
