Olympia’s Oh, Rose opened the show. The band is named after Olivia Rose (O. Rose), who sings and play guitars. She’s joined on stage by drummer Liam Hindahl, bassist Kevin Christopher, and synth player Sarah Redden.
This is Oh, Rose’s second time in Minneapolis. They fondly explained that the first time they were in town (at the Exchange on New Year’s Eve?) and how it was “-15 degrees outside.” Thankfully, last night’s temperature were all positive numbers.
Between songs, Rose would sometime comment about how she didn’t think this was a job… but rather an experience. She dropped some names of some very special people in her life that she gets to see when she goes on tour, and hanging out with those people were just the best.
About half of their set (see setlist photo) were actually from their future album While My Father Sleeps (set for release for August 23, 2019), while the other half were taken from their latest (2015) album called SEVEN.
Yeasayer (featuring three core members, Chris Keating, Ira Wolf Tuton, and Anand Wilder) came on stage to start their set with “Madder Red”. The person working the soundboard and lighting must be with the band, as the song was played in complete deep blood red. The lights (or lack of) continues through their set, keeping in theme to dark blue or red.
The audience, who were all clearly there for Yeasayer, didn’t mind the darkness and danced to all the tunes.
If you’re a fan of Animal Collective, they do share a similar music style… and even share their alma mater of Park School of Baltimore. As they developed their sound, getting tips from Man Man and MGMT, Yeasayer’s Eastern-music-inspired debut record of All Hour Cymbals evolved to more pop-music with their sophomore album Odd Blood (their first record signed to labels Secretly Canadian and Mute Records).
We last saw Yeasayer in May 2016 and described the show as, “Yeasayer's stage is always interesting. Last time I saw them the stage was filled with mirrors that gave off an awesome effect when mixed with the lights and movement. Last night, the stage was filled with strange characters that had certain parts of them light up. For example, there was a figure of a Victorian style female standing next to a stack of speakers. She had three sets of arms that were illuminated by strings of light and the speakers and her face would light up along with the music. My friend quickly became obsessed with the figure of a child with a pineapple on his head that was out front and center of the stage. For this figure, the middle of the pineapple had been cut out and light flashed brightly through it. There was also a string of lights that illuminated the crouching child's butt. The figures were strange and almost distracting because you were trying to figure out what they actually were.”
Three years later, Yeasayer is back with Erotic Reruns… their first record on their own label Yeasayer Records (their first since Odd Blood that isn’t on Mute or Secretly Canadian). The fifth studio album received relatively positive reviews from critics when it came out a few weeks ago (June 7, 2019).
