Opening the sold-out show at the 7th Street Entry on Thursday night was local band Ice Palace. We haven’t seen the band since April 2009: “Ice Palace: Clearly, having been touring the country with Cloud Cult have been good to Ice Palace. They were very confident on stage, and everyone had an especially good time rocking out. I will tell you what though: for their first two songs ("Outside The Gates" and "Phonebook Pillow"), they had three guitars, one bass, and drums. Yes, lots of loud clashing layers of guitars, particularly on "Phonebook Pillow". My favorite songs from the set was the trumpet songs ("Devils Tower", "Thoughts/Facts"). For their finale, they had, I think the drummer from The Good Night Sleeps' Arlen Peiffer joining them on stage to do tambourine.”
Ice Palace is a large band, led by singer/guitarist Adam Sorensen, and featuring Allison LaBonne (from The Owls) on vocals and keys, Casey Virock on guitars, Ian Prince on guitar, Jared Miller on bass, and Emily Ruiz on drums. The group played music, such as “Slow Motion Fall”, from their latest How I Came to Win the War (Korda Records).
The Minneapolis show was special for Tow’rs, as it was the band’s first time in Minneapolis, and also the show had sold out earlier in the day.
The self-described “family band” featuring Kyle Miller (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar), Gretta Miller (vocals), Kyle Keller (electric guitar, synthesizer, background vocals), Dan Bagley, Caleb Friesen (drums, percussion), is actually originally a group of strangers who met and through the love of music, became a band.
Before starting their 90-min set with “Holy Water”, Kyle Miller was doing this weird whispering or gently blowing to his acoustic guitar. The majority of their set featured songs from Grey Fidelity, including fan-favorite song “Girl In Calico”.
You can tell that the audience loved their storytelling singer/songwriter songs, and it’s that word of mouth recommendation from friends and family that sold out the show. Hopefully, with such strong support locally for the band, we can see them come back for a future tour.
