NYC-born, Los Angeles-based EZI (pronounced like “eh-sy”, as in an abbreviated version of Esther Zyskind) opened the show. With currently one EP Afraid of the Dark out, she did play a couple of tracks, including “DaNcing in a RoOm” as the penultimate song.
You can tell that she has a lot of songs in her, and EZI kept talking about upcoming new music she’s releasing. She played “Need You Like That”, set for release for November 6th on 5Town Records. The song is about temptation and was written on a whim at 1am in a basement in New York.
Since she had a limited 30-min set and limited song released, she opted to cover The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” right in the middle of her set. It was big highlight, as the entire crowd helped EZI sing the popular song.
Bryce Vine was up next, and based on the audience’s strong feedback and singing along, they really love this guy. Hearing his lyrics, you can just tell this self-confessed slacker and just sings about the truth. He knows it’s wrong, but he doesn’t give a f*** in “Guilty Pleasure”.
Sometime critics easily dismiss rappers, but I’m telling you, this kid is smart and funny, and he has a knack for writing catchy lyrics.
Before he ended his set with “Sour Patch Kids” (a song about not wanting to worry and being a kid), he had the audience sing “Happy Birthday” to his new tour manager, Ryan.
MAX (aka Maxwell George Schneider) started his set with an incredibly energetic Whethan cover of “Savage”.
Since the tour is for House of Divine, a forthcoming album due in 2019 via Red Music/DCD2 Records, he did play a few tracks from the record, including “Worship”.
Biggest hits of the night were probably for “Lights Down Low” and “Holla”.
If you miss Max on this sold-out tour, he is returning to Xcel Energy Center on December 3rd as part of 101.3 KDWB's Jingle Ball.
