19-year-old Australian Mallrat (aka Grace Shaw) opened the show. She’s joined on stage with DJ Denim, who provided all the music to Mallrat’s songs.
Mallrat is easily likeable. After starting her set with “Make Time”, she quickly got our hopes up when she said, “that was our slowest song, so from here onward, it’s all bouncy dance songs.”
Sure enough, she’s out dancing and being the self-described “Hannah Montana of the rap game”. Midway in her set, she explained that she wrote all these songs, including the EP In the Sky (Nettwerk Records), when she was 16 years old. “So if you like them, awesome. If you don’t like them... I was 16!”
Since this is their first U.S. tour, for the introduction to her song “Texas”, the young singer was so excited to announce that they just played Texas last week. It’s really charming.
Possibly their biggest hit of the night was “For Real” and set closer “Uninvited”, which were bit hits with celebrities (Perez Hilton, Chloe Grace Moretz, Brooklyn Beckham, Lorde).
Coming on stage to ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” (which incidentally the Vaccines also used recently), Maggie Rogers danced wildly to her set starter “Give a Little”.
Rogers explained that, “We don’t have a ton of songs out in the world, so we’re just going to play the new record.”
She’s referring to her debut album Heard It In A Past Life, which isn’t going to be out until January 18, 2019 via Capitol Records. She basically played the entire album, and throwing in some songs from her EP and a John Prine cover of “Angel From Montgomery” on the encore.
Talking in the middle of her set, Maggie Rogers said that after years of touring (she just stopped by Minneapolis in April 2017), she decided to take a break and reflect on her life. The break was good for her, as she seemed more energetic and eager to meet and sing to her fans - and it shows from one look at her constant smiling face on stage.
