Opening the show was Chicago-based duo Drama (not to be confused with UK’s Drama, punk band Drama, Norwegian pop rock Drama, or New Jersey’s Dramarama). The R&B/dance group features singer Via Rosa and DJ/beats Na’el Shehade. This was the band’s first time in Minneapolis, and they love it.
The story that Rosa told about their secret origin as a band was that Shehade was working as owner/manager of three restaurants, but he had always had a passion for being creative. The two met one day and he instantly wanted Rosa in his band. Rosa showed up to a rehearsal for this “band” and it turned out it was just the two of them in a studio. As history would have it, the two hit it off and created their band Drama.
Rosa, dressed with a led light head band, sang soulful lyrics over Shehade’s R&B, house music beats and melodies.
In the middle of their set, they stopped their song “Barely Friends”, when a woman near the front of the stage collapsed. Rosa, concerned, “Are you alright?” Shehad added, “Someone call 911.”
The First Avenue staffs (First Ave own the Fine Line since October 1st) rushed to the spot where the woman fainted and after a few minutes, she appeared to be fine.
The “Barely Friends” song continued, but within a few minutes, you can see the ambulance’s lights outside the venue.
The duo ended their set with their new single, “Ready For Love”, complete with bubbles.
Prior to appearing at her sold-out Fine Line Music Café show, Jain (aka Jeanne Galice) stopped by the The Current’s studio for an interview/conversation with Mac Wilson. She performed three songs (“Makeba”, “Inspecta”, and “Alright”), and she sounded very excited to be back in the Twin Cities.
Jain quickly reminded us how amazing it was when she came to Minneapolis in March 2017, and said, “I think Minneapolis was the first show to sell out!”
She added that she didn’t think she would be back so soon, but she was excited that her second appearance in town has also sold out. The Minneapolis audience couldn’t get enough of her, packed shoulder-to-shoulder in the narrow Fine Line Music Café.
When we saw her in 2017, she only had her debut record Zanaka, so basically she played the entire album live. She threw in a few new songs, which we noted as “Paris” and “Soldier”. Both songs appeared on this current 2018 setlist, however, the latter song is spelled as “Souldier”. The song, according to Jain, was inspired by the 2016 Orlando nightclub and is a play off of “soul” and “soldier”.
Jain’s Souldier is out now on Spookland Records/Columbia/Sony Music.
