The turnout was incredibly good, and speaking to the fans in the audience, many, if not all, of them also attended their 2016 show at First Avenue.
For music fans who grew up in the 90s, you may have heard about Belly, thanks to their big hit song “Feed the Tree” on Modern Rock stations across the country. The single sent their debut album Star straight to RIAA certified gold.
The group had a few other hits, like “Gepetto” and “Slow Dog”, and you can always tell because the audience always goes nuts whenever those songs were played.
Belly was really on the top of the world in 1993, even co-headlined a tour with Radiohead. Unfortunately, even with initial success, the band had trouble keeping or gaining new audience for the band’s sophomore album King. So, in 1996, band leader Tanya Donelly broke up the band.
Fast-forward to 2016, Donelly and company decided it was time for a reunion tour. We were lucky enough to catch the reformed band at First Avenue in September 2016 and wrote, “Singer Donelly went on to a solo career post-Belly and still has her trademark raspy pixie alternapop voice, bassist Greenwood still stalks the stage wildly and brothers Gorman seemed to have lost very little musical chops in their time away, part of which was spent being commercial photographers. “Welcome to the ‘90s!” Greenwood declared, thanking everyone for coming out and deeming the crowd as the coolest in town, for doing so.”
We also got previews of new Belly songs on their 2016 set, those songs eventually made it onto their Dove album, which came out earlier this year.
For whatever reason, their fan-favorite song “Gepetto” was left off their 2016 set, but we were pleased that they’ve now included it on this year’s tour.
Of course, the biggest reaction of the night would have to fall upon “Feed the Tree”, played early in their second set.
You can tell that the group learned a lot from their original reunion tour and became better at touring and travelling across the country. Taking into account their legion of fans (who funded their Dove album and made this tour possible), they’ve put together a hand-crafted setlist for us… including videos of cute dogs throughout time and space as an intro to their set.
As for the new Dove songs, the band seemed to love playing the new songs. This may probably have to do with the fact that the entire band shared in songwriting duties… not just centered on Donnelly. With enough fans, it may not be long before we get another four-lettered album in the upcoming year. And that’s great news for Belly fans, because that would mean more future tours.
