Destroyer Setlist

Opening the show was experimental pop group Mega Bog, led by Brooklyn’s Erin Birgy. She’s joined on stage by her live band, including Matt Bachmann (from Big Eater) and Derek Baron. The lineup has slightly changed since we last saw Mega Bog in May 2016, but the band still sounds as quirky as ever.
The band played a lot of new songs from their album Happy Together (Nicey Music), which, when played live, sounds a bit like an offbeat jazz album. Vocally, I have described Erin Birgy’s singing voice as a bit like Kate Bush, or now, perhaps Nico.
Birgy kept the conversation to a minimum, only introducing themselves midway into their set, “Hi, we’re Mega Bog.” After hearing someone shout a song title, Birgy responded, “I’ll play anything… I’m very much joking.”
A little later, Birgy confessed that she felt uncomfortable the whole night because she left her shoes in her car and only wearing loafers. Given the cold weather of Minneapolis, Birgy closed the story with, “I feel like a dork.”
Destroyer came on stage slightly later than advertised. The Vancouver band is fronted by singer-songwriter Dan Bejar, and features Nicholas Bragg on guitar, Tim Loewen on bass, Ted Bois on keys, Scott Morgan on drums, and secret weapon Fisher Rose on trumpet.
The thing to note about Destroyer is that they sound very different from album to album. In Bejar’s words, “That's kind of my goal: to start from scratch every time.”
Currently, with the eleventh studio album ken (Merge Records), Bejar is in love with Suede (or as known in the United States as London Suede for legal reasons). Suede’s singer Brett Anderson has a very distinctive yelp to his singing style, and you can hear the influences on their new record, especially hearing it live.
Lead single “In the Morning”, sounds like a lost Suede song, with its strong muscular music and wonderful lyrics that sounds like poetry. Bejar is intense when he’s performing. He’s deep in thought and sometime, when he’s lost in music, he would crouch down and hide from center stage.
If you didn’t love Destroyer’s previous Poison Season because it was just too raw and personal, you’ll find that ken is a good return to 90’s music.
Destroyer’s ken is out now on Merge Records.
