Jay Som opened the show.
We last saw Jay Som with The Courtneys at the 7th Street Entry in Mar 2017 and wrote, “San Francisco’s Jay Som closed out the night. Jay Som (aka Melina Duterte) has been in Minneapolis a few times, including July 2016 and October 2016, but this time has a headliner.... and with a debut album called Everybody Works finally out on Polyvinyl Records. The record is so good that as soon as it came out, Pitchfork declared it as “Best New Music”. They played those new songs, including the title track ‘Everybody Works’, ‘1 Billion Dogs’, ‘The Bus Song’, and ‘Take It’ (played early in their set). Of course, they also included some older songs, like ‘Turn Into’, from last year’s release.”
Jay Som’s album Everybody Works is available now on Polyvinyl Records.
This was Alvvays’ biggest headlining gig yet, playing the mainroom at First Avenue in Minneapolis. The Canadian band is touring in support of their second album Antisocialites… which received rave reviews across the board.
Pitchfork wrote, “Alvvays have sharpened their focus without losing sight of themselves”, while NPR adored the album, saying, “for all the noisy textures and shimmering sing-alongs on Antisocialites, Alvvays seem intent on masking pain while convincing others, and perhaps themselves, that everything’s fine. It’s a tricky balancing act, but that’s what makes this band so damn endearing.”
We’ve “always” liked Alvvays, going back to Nov 2014, when we discussed how great their single, “Archie, Marry Me”… which the band made sure they play near the end of their First Avenue set.
The encore consisted of “Next of Kin” and a cover of The Motorcycle Boy’s “Trying to be Kind”.
Alvvays’ Antisocialites is available now on Polyvinyl, Royal Mountain, Transgressive and Inertia
