Tei Shi (aka Valerie Teicher) just headlined the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last week, October 3rd, in support of her debut album Crawl Space.
Ontario’s Dizzy (with dreamy vocals from Katie M) opened up the show. The group suffers from a common band name, so not to be confused with Dizzy (Donald Eley), Dizzy (Daniel Ellis), Canadian hip-hop artist Dizzy, Dizzy Fae, Dizzy Rascals, and, of course Dizzy Gillespie, the famous Jazz trumpeter.
Dizzy is signed on the same label, Royal Mountain Records, that handles Alvvays and Hollerado, but looking over their catalog, the label has not release any music from Dizzy. Still, they’re in good company.
The young band was formerly known as Good Ghost, but they've changed their name to Dizzy in November 2015. They only had a handful of songs, so they actually ended their set a little earlier than their 30-min allotted time.
New York, by the way of Canada, Tei Shi came on stage slightly later than advertised. She had mentioned that this was her first headlining tour, and that she was here one other time in Minneapolis. She couldn’t quite remember, but we do. We saw her at the Varsity Theater with Years & Years in September 2015, and wrote:
Like her last appearance, she is accompanied by two additional musicians, one handling keys with beats/percussions, and the other played guitar.
Tei Shi’s stage presence was important to her, so she’s dressed up in a nice outfit (of course, anything other than a T-shirt and jeans, we would consider is nice), and had exaggerated arm movements and had much passion in her vocals.
‘See Me’ was dedicated to Dizzy, which Teicher mentioned would be playing in Canada next (this) week.
She ended her set with her latest single, ‘Say You Do’, and of course, the very last song, was her most popular song, ‘Bassically’.
Tei Shi and Dizzy are currently in Canada right now… they’ll return to the states on October 14 at the Barboza in Seattle.

The evening began with a brief but highly enjoyable 30 min. set by Tei Shi (aka Valerie Teicher) and her self-described dreamy blend of “mermaid music”. Teicher, with shoulder length dark hair and wearing a striped turtleneck, brought along two electronic bandmates with her, and an ethereal light show more involved than you usually see from any opening act….. Her bass heavy Beyoncé cover of ‘No Angel’ turned the song upside-down and the set ended with ‘Bassically’, another heavy bottomed song that stopped on a dime, then morphed into something greater. Any fan of Banks or Phantogram, is encouraged to hear what you might be missing with Tei Shi.
