Philadelphia’s The Spirit Of The Beehive kickstarted the event, playing tracks from their sophomore album Pleasure Suck (Tiny Engines). The band mentioned that they had spent the last 16 hours in a car driving from Seattle to Minneapolis, “so it feels good to be playing a show tonight.”
The noisy, psychedelic rock band traded boys/girls vocals in their brief 30-min set. They ended with a song they’ve jokingly called “Rocket Potato”, after their appearance in Vancouver, Canada.
Also from Philadelphia, was Mannequin Pussy, with a high energy 30-min burst of punk rock music starting with ‘Someone Like You’.
Mannequin Pussy started as a duo of singer/frontwoman Marisa Dabice and guitarist Thanasi Paul, but currently they are a quartet with Kaleen and Bear.
Midway into their set, Dabice asked if the venue could turn on the disco ball…. and a few minutes later, the disco ball was turned on.
For their final song, which was written as ‘Outro’ on their setlist, Japanese Breakfast’s touring guitarist jumped on stage to help them close out their song finale.
As previously, this was Japanese Breakfast’s first headlining show. In the brief time that we’ve known her, she’s previous appeared with Mitski in July 2016, with Porches in September 2016, with Slowdive in May 2017, and with (Sandy) Alex G in June 2017. We’ve gradually seen her feel more comfortable on stage, and, personally speaking, she was at her finest hour at the Triple Rock Social Club show. The spotlight was finally full focused on her, and she was ready to shine. Clearly she gave a lot of thought in her appearance by dressing up in a white laced top, white pants, and amazing white light-up sneakers.
As you can see from her setlist, she played a balanced mix of her two albums, Psychopomp (2016) and Soft Sounds from Another Planet (2017).
Interestingly enough, ‘Boyish’ was played midset. The song was re-recorded for Soft Sounds from Another Planet, but it was originally from Michelle Zauner’s former band, Little Big League. The four piece Philadelphia emo band broke up after Zauner moved back to Oregon to take care of her mother.
