Local group Dichotomy (duo Alex and Joe) opened up the show with some indie electronic music. Their latest release Rose Series is a three-track EP, released in May 2017. The idea for this series is that Dichotomy will add a new single every month.

After two years since their debut record, and relocating to London, England (as the band mentioned during the show), the actually have a full new album written, tentatively titled Go Farther In Lightness, and they previewed some of those songs for us. Unfortunately, since the album and official titles haven’t been released, we can’t really reference or compile a correct setlist for you. New songs, which made up 50% of their playlist, included something called ‘Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane’, which is about a reoccurring dream about a dead wife and waking up in a hospital.
Anyway, in stark contrast to Diet Cig on the previous night, Gang of Youths made use of their entire one hour and forty minutes of their set. Diet Cig could only muster 45 mins...
The main reason for this is that singer David Le'aupepe spoke (a lot!) between songs. Often explaining what the songs were about, which sometime gave insights into what was going through his mind.
The band also mentioned that they were big fan of the Minneapolis music scene, name-dropping The Replacements, Prince, and Hüsker Dü (Bob Mould) as some of their favorite bands.
In the middle of their set, during ‘Knuckles White Dry’, the rest of the band took a break as Le'aupepe sang/played solo. Like many of their songs, it’s about what happens when a relationship breaks down.
As for the encore, the band said they weren’t going to pretend to walk off the stage and return. Instead they headed straight into their hit ‘Magnolia’ song, which closed out their show. The song is a bit depressing if you knew the backstory of it, as it is about contemplating suicide and other dark thoughts.
Look for Gang of Youths’ upcoming album Go Farther In Lightness in the near future.
