There is hope for modern music. There is hope for the modern world. There are people who know what’s really going on; those who are awake and want to bring the revolution. Listen to Tunabunny’s latest creation and you’ll hear the proof.
The experimental indie rock darlings from Athens, GA recently announced the coming of their fifth full length album, PCP Presents Alice In Wonderland Jr. The record is set for a June 23 release on Happy Happy Birthday to Me (HHBTM) Records.
This double vinyl gem is the long-anticipated follow-up to 2014’s Kingdom Technology.
PCP Presents Alice In Wonderland Jr’s 28 tracks are structured as a song-by-song response to The Beatles’ White Album. Its title perfectly encapsulates the “surreal dystopian nightmare all around us.”
This record flows well; one song segues seamlessly into the next. Some songs are short and sound like a baby’s heartbeat on a sonogram. Some are like lullabies. There are multiple vocal tracks in perfect counterpoint, one voice calling out and the other(s) answering, echoing or amplifying the first. Some vocals are melodic, some are shouts. Some are whispers and some are like narration; many songs combine some or all of these elements.
PCP Presents Alice In Wonderland Jr runs the gamut from the straight-ahead satisfaction of indie rock to the realm of the spacy and ethereal. It’s sometimes choppy and punkish; sometimes flowing and anthemic. The band experiments with all manner of sounds and effects, layering these tracks to please and tease the ears.
“I Thought I Caught It (With You)” is a triumph of a song and by far the album’s best. It’s a classic Tunabunny indie rock gem. This song is melodic with a supremely satisfying buildup, adding more instruments and vocal tracks as it progresses. It features beautiful, soaring lead and background vocals in perfect harmony. It speeds up, slows down, and then repeats. Feet will tap, and the people will sing.
No holds barred, PCP Presents Alice In Wonderland Jr takes the listener on a wondrous tour of all states of being. Some of these songs hint at bleakness, dreariness; some teem with urgency. Some capture the sounds of confusion, of a mind spilling over with conflicting images and emotions; some devolve into madness and chaos. Some make you sing and dance, and some even make you soar.
Top tracks: “Incinerate,” “Shiftchanger (ft. Wellz)” (featuring guest vocals by Jason Wellz of The Bastards of Fate), “The Rest Of Us,” “I Thought I Caught It (With You).”
Tunabunny will be appearing at this year’s Athens Popfest on August 12th.
