If you watched Netflix’s Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return, which premiered April 14th, you may have noticed that, in fact, Har Mar Superstar co-sing the new theme song!
What is even funnier is that Har Mar’s onscreen band is actually the evil minions from the Shaw Brothers’ film Super Inframan (1975). I had to dust out my DVD copy from Image Entertainment (US version) to make sure I wasn’t seeing things.
The Hong Kong classic was basically a knock off of Japan’s Kamen Rider (aka Mask Rider) and proved that the Shaw Brothers were simply terrible at making these science fiction films. Simply one of the cheesiest film you’ll see from a SB production.
Anyway, the new MST3K series was a result of overwhelming fan support from their Kickstarter in November 2015. Production ran over a year, and eventually all 14 episodes were sold to Netflix for distribution. Hopefully, like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, we may see MST3K The Return on Bluray discs a year from now.
