Death by Unga Bunga Setlist
Beebe Gallini Setlist
|
Opening up the show was local band Beebe Gallini with Miss Georgia Peach on guitar and vocals, Amy Larson Pearson on bass and backup vocals, Travis Ramin on lead guitars, and Chris Audette on drums. From my understanding, they’re influence by gang girl groups of the 60s, and I believe they took their name from a character from The Brady Bunch television show.
Most of their setlist is taken from their record Need All The Help I Can Get, but included some new songs like (I think) for ‘Gone Gone Gone’, which Peach said that it was the first time they’ve ever played that song live.
Norway’s Death By Unga Bunga is a large-ish band, featuring Sebastian Ulstad Olsen on lead vocals and guitar, Preben S. Andersen on keyboards and sometime alternating vocals, Stian S. Gulbrandsen on guitar, Even Rolland Pettersen on bass, and Ole S. Nesset on drums. They’re currently on tour for their latest album Pineapple Pizza.
The band started in 2007 when Sebastian handpicked various musicians in Moss, Norway, who did not know each other. Early in their career had Petter Cindahl on drums and Marius Røhr on vocals. Unhappy with their punk direction, Sebasian decided to take over vocal duties, and added more band members to their roster.
When I first heard the band’s name, I knew it from a rather rude joke. I read this joke from one of those adolescent boys’ joke books. I’ll retell you the joke, from my poor memory (which may or may not be more explicit). The joke goes, two explorers were caught by natives in the Amazon. When offered the choice of death or Unga Bunga, the first explorer, in not wanting to die, chose Unga Bunga. The natives basically pulled a train on the first guy. The second guy, after seeing this, decided the smart choice was death. Immediately the natives all cheered, “Death by Unga Bunga! Death by Unga Bunga!”
The funny thing is, the band actually didn’t know the true origin of the name... and actually based their name after The Mummies’ 2003 album Death By Unga Bunga!! (The Mummies is one of Sebastian's favorite bands).
The band name and often crass cover artwork and attitude suggests that they’re just a fun band and not to be taken too seriously. Their live show is something short of magnificent, complete with guitar poses. Singer Sebastian often spending more time on the dance floor (or walking outside the venue to check out the streets!) than actually performing on stage.
Like the unexpected dance moves from Death by Unga Bunga, their setlist also may change from night to night. For last week’s show, they’ve added ‘Lady Fondue’ or ‘Wasting Time’ (but announced as ‘I Want to Die’), plus other surprises on their set.
Death by Unga Bunga’s Pineapple Pizza is out now.
