DECEMBER
Jaymes Fenda and the Vulcans (29 Dec 2017):
I'm sorry to report that Scottish comic book artist (and musician) Jim Baikie has died on December 29, 2017, at the age of 77 (as mentioned by
@philhester). Baikie was probably best known for his work on
Skizz with influential writer Alan Moore.
After leaving the Royal Air Force in 1963, Baikie explored being an artist and bass player for such bands like Jaymes Fenda and the Vulcans and Compass.
His comic book work started with Valentine for Fleetway Comics. As previously mentioned, he worked with Alan More for
Skizz, and took over as writer and artist for
Skizz II and
Skizz III for 2000AD.
In the U.S., he's probably best known for co-creating
Electric Warrior with writer Doug Moench.
Maroon 5 (22 Dec 2017):
Brother of actor Jonah Hill and longtime manager of Maroon 5, Jordan Feldstein has suddenly died at the age of 40. The cause of death was a heart attack, according to the Feldstein family.
In addition to managing Maroon 5, Feldstein formed Career Artist Management (CAM) and managed Miguel, Elle King and Robin Thicke, etc.
Jordan Feldstein was a father to two children and was previously married twice, once to Francesca Eastwood in 2013, the daughter of Clint Eastwood.
Shinee (18 Dec 2017): Kim Jong-hyun (aka Jonghyun), the South Korean singer-songwriter for boy band Shinee, committed suicide at the age of 27.
His sister had received disturbing text and suspected her brother was going to commit suicide, so she called the police to his apartment in Seoul. They found his body and it was rushed to Konkuk University Hospital. He was pronounced dead from inhaling toxic carbon monoxide from a coal briquettes burnt on a frying pan.
Close friends to Jonghyun (such as fellow singer and friend Nine, of the band Dear Cloud) knew about his depression and his struggle with fame.

NOVEMBER
Charles Manson (19 Nov 2017):
Manson achieved counterculture/cult status in the most literal way possible by becoming the leader of his own cult, the Manson Family. He has inspired terror on the one hand and near-religious devotion on the other. He always wanted fame, and when he didn’t receive it by becoming a rock star, he set his sights on mass murder as a means to gain notoriety....
Charles Manson died of natural causes on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at the age of 83 while serving 9 consecutive life sentences in a California penitentiary.
AC/DC (18 Nov 2017):
Malcolm Young, co-founder and guitarist of AC/DC, has died today, Saturday, November 18th, at the age of 64. According to the statement below, Young suffered from many years of Dementia.
Lil Peep (15 Nov 2017):

Of course, all of Lil Peep’s official merchandises sold out immediately.
Faith No More (09 Nov 2017):
The original vocalist for Faith No More, Chuck Mosley, has died on Thursday at the age of 57. His family wrote, “After a long period of sobriety, Charles Henry Mosley III lost his life, on November 9th, 2017, due to the disease of addiction. We’re sharing the manner in which he passed, in the hopes that it might serve as a warning or wake up call or beacon to anyone else struggling to fight for sobriety. He is survived by long-term partner Pip Logan, two daughters, Erica and Sophie and his grandson Wolfgang Logan Mosley. The family will be accepting donations for funeral expenses.”

OCTOBER
Fats Domino (24 Oct 2017): It’s widely reported that R&B singer and pianist Fats Domino is dead at the age of 89.
Domino had more than 30 top 40 hits to his name, with his signature song ‘Blueberry Hill’ being his most well-known song.
With over 65 million singles sold, Fats Domino is only second to Elvis Presley as far as popular music sold in that time period of 1955-1960.
Tom Petty (02 Oct 2017):
We all heard that Tom Petty died on Monday. There was a little confusion, as CBS and the LAPD jumped the gun and reported his death earlier than the official time of death. They walked back the death report, but ultimately by 9pm we learned that he passed away.
The news of his death seemed untimely, as just weeks before (late September 2017), he was playing three sold out nights at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles…. Ending his extensive North American tour celebrating the 40th anniversary of their self-titled debut.
Petty also dabbed in acting, appearing in the film
The Postman, starring Kevin Costner. He also had a reoccurring role as the voice of Elroy “Lucky” Kleinschmidt in
King of the Hill.

SEPTEMBER
Charles Bradley (23 Sep 2017): Rollingstone just announced that Charles Bradley is dead at the age of 68 to cancer.
Like most musicians who had a late start in success (after 42 years in the music industry as a James Brown impersonator before going solo with Daptone Records), Bradley made his living as a live musician. In fact, he was actually in the middle of his 2017 tour (due to be in Minnesota on September 28, 2017, at the Fitzgerald Theater), when the unexpected news of his death came.
Hüsker Dü (14 Sep 2017):
While this came as no surprise to us, it’s still sad to hear that Grant Hart from Hüsker Dü has died. He was 56.
When we saw Hart on 20 July 2017, we didn’t know going in that it would be his last show. As the show started, and seeing Hart on stage, with clear visible loss of weight from his July 3rd appearance: we knew something was wrong. It didn’t take a genius to conclude that he was terminal. We didn’t want to say it, but if you were there to witness the tears and a weakened Hart (he had an assistant helping him on stage, etc.), you would come to the right conclusion too.
Just before his death, Hart made peace with Bob Mould and announced a special Husker Du boxset, called SAVAGE YOUNG D√ú.
Those Darlins (12 Sep 2017):
I’m very sad to announce that Jessi Zazu (aka Jessi Darlins of Those Darlins) has passed away at the age of 28.
We love Jessi and the band and have probably covered them more times than any other bands (a total of 9 times!).
Obviously, we’re big fans and really heartbroken that Jessi is no longer with us.
I rarely do interviews, but couldn’t pass this offer to talk to Jessi in 2013. You can listen by clicking on the right column, or go here. I’ll never forget that day. We had scheduled to talk at noon her time, but when I called, I think I woke her up from bed. Obviously, she’s not a morning person.
Little Barrie (11 Sep 2017):
Virgil Howe, the drummer of Little Barrie has passed away at the age of 41 on September 11th, as confirmed by their press agent. Howe was 41.
If you’re a Breaking Bad fan, you would have heard Little Barrie’s terrific theme song to the spin-off show Better Call Saul. In addition to the theme song, Saul also feature ‘Why Don’t You Do It’.
Don Williams (08 Sep 2017):
The “Gentle Giant” of Country music, Don Williams has passed away today (September 8th), as confirmed by Williams’ PR company, Webster PR. He was 78.
The Country Music Hall of Famer, known for his smooth baritone, gentle soft voice, died after a short illness.
Earlier this year, the singer was the subject of a tribute album, Gentle Giants: The Songs of Don Williams, that included performances of his hits by artists such as Lady Antebellum and Garth Brooks.
Montgomery Gentry (08 Sep 2017): Troy Gentry, of country band Montgomery Gentry, died in a helicopter crash today in New Jersey. He was 50.
The duo was schedule to perform tonight at the Flying W Airport & Resort in Medford... but obviously the show is now cancelled.
Montgomery Gentry confirmed his death took place around 1pm, via twitter.com.
Painted Hills (07 Sep 2017): Josh Schwartz (aka Painted Hills), the singer-songwriter and guitarist for John Cale and The Charlatans, as well as Further and The Summer Hits, has died after a long battle with ALS at the age of 45.
Everyone in Los Angeles who knew Josh had only amazing things to say about this young guitarist.
Steely Dan (03 Sep 2017):
Co-founder of Steely Dan, guitarist, bassist, songwriter Walter Becker has died today (September 3rd, 2017), as announced on his
official website.
Becker and Donald Fagen met at Bard College and formed Steely Dan in California around 1971. If you want to read about the Steely Dan years, don’t bother picking up Fagen’s autobiography
Eminent Hipsters.
Steely Dan broke up in the late 80s, but reformed in 1993. The two Becker & Fagen remained active in Steely Dan, even up to the recent Summer 2017 shows. However, Becker was ill enough that he couldn’t make it to the Classic West Music Festival in Los Angeles in July 2017.

AUGUST
Jerry Lewis (20 Aug 2017): Comedian Jerry Lewis (not to be confused with singer/pianist Jerry Lee Lewis) has died on Sunday (today, August 20th), after a brief illness, according to cnn.com. He was 91.
Lewis first came to fame as the unpredictable goofy “boy” in the comedy/music act with singer Dean Martin from 1946 to 1955. People often criticize Lewis for making fun of the mentally ill in his comedy routine, but he quieted their criticism when he started raising billions of dollars to help battle muscular dystrophy with his annual telethons.
Glen Campbell (08 Aug 2017):
Although we’re not surprised to learn that country singer Glen Campbell has died today (Tuesday) to his long battle with Alzheimer’s disease .... it’s still very sad to hear the news. Campbell was 81.

JUNE
Sonny Knight (17 Jun 2017):
Minneapolis-based soul singer, Sonny Knight, has died. He was 69.
We love the retro-soul sound of Knight and is deeply sad to hear about his passing. We’ve been writing about Knight since 2014, but the truth is, he’s been around for over 50 years: “The story goes, if you need a refresher ... Knight recorded his first single with band The Cymbals, in 1965 on New Teenage Records when he was just 17. A stint in the Army, some time spent in the Bay Area, a brief outing with local funk band Haze, and miscellaneous jobs followed, before local group The Valdons were resurrected in 2012 for the initial Secret Stash compilation album, then followed by The Lakers – an overnight success that only took 50 years.”
Earlier on 20 April 2017, we got a press release from their record label, Secret Stash Records, telling us that Sonny Knight was forced to cancel his May 2017 tour because cancer treatment (located in his lung, ribs, and spine). We’d heard a similar story before, when Sharon Jones postponed her tour due to cancer treatment. She was doing well for a while, even think she’s beat it... but ultimately, untimely, she died in November 2016.
Good night, Sonny Knight.
Afghan Whigs (27 Jun 2017):
Guitarist Dave Rosser from the Afghan Whigs died after a battle with cancer, according to
vanyaland.com, “Rosser, who also played with Twilight Singers, Mark Lanegan, Marc Broussard, and others, was diagnosed with inoperable colon cancer last October. A GoFundMe launched around the time of his diagnosis generated more than $65,000, and a series of benefit shows were organized by Greg Dulli in December.”
The Afghan Whigs' recently announced their US tour in September (read about it on
news.weheartmusic.com) in support of
In Spades (out now on Sub Pop).

MAY
The Allman Brothers Band (27 May 2017):
Founding member of The Allman Brothers Band, singer and keyboardist Gregg Allman has passed away on Saturday, May 27th, at his home in Savannah, Georgia. He was 69.
The New York Times and his publicist, Ken Weinstein, confirmed the cause of death was from complications of liver cancer.
Soundgarden (18 May 2017): Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, has died at the age of 52. According to
telegraph.co.uk, they noted that the police are investigating his death as a possible suicide.
Cornell was last seen in Minneapolis in
October 2015 when he was touring in support of his solo record
Higher Truth. Combined with his successful reunion tour for Soundgarden (many of the dates were sold out), it didn’t make sense to us that there was even a hint of suicide as the local Detroit police suggested.
We will have to wait to find out what the The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office will say when they determine the cause of death.
Mazzy Star (14 May 2017): Keith Mitchell has passed away on Sunday, May 14th. Mazzy Star issued this statement:
Our hearts are broken. We have lost the much beloved Keith Mitchell, a very talented and amazing drummer that we have had the privilege to work with for many years, he will live in all of our hearts forever... We'll miss you Big Fella.
Grandaddy (02 May 2017):
Grandaddy’s bassist and co-founder Kevin Garcia, died at the age 41 to a stroke.
The band actually reformed and recently just wrapped up a UK tour in in support of their new album Last Place last month, and was set to go on a U.S. tour ... but with Garcia’s death, the U.S. tour may be on indefinite hiatus.
I caught Grandaddy a little over 16 years ago at First Avenue on 09 May 2001, with all the original band members, including Kevin Garcia. Although, I will confess I haven’t exactly followed their new music, I still love The Sophtware Slump and think it is one of the best album of all time.
Col. Bruce Hampton (01 May 2017):
As reported by TMZ with photos, Col. Bruce Hampton popular musician in Atlanta collapsed staged during the middle of an encore for ‘Turn on Your Lovelight’, at his 70th birthday celebration.
The band kept on playing, as they thought it was part of the performance.
Hampton was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

JANUARY
Notable names:
2 Belgen (28 Jan 2017):
Thanks to reader Johan, who sent in the link and information, regarding the death of Rembert De Smet singer of 2 Belgen on Saturday at the age of 62 to cancer. The news hit all of Belgium’s news channels and newspapers - but the U.S. has yet to mention De Smet’s death. I should mentioned that he started work in the late ‘80s, but didn’t use his real name! Some of his early monikers includes the names Ro Maron and Agaric.
His best-known band 2 Belgen (Twee Belgen), featuring Rembert De Smet on guitars and vocals and Herman Celis on drums. The band is known for their three big hit songs ‘Lena’ (1985), ‘Queen Of Mine’ (1985), and ‘Opération Coup de Poing’ (1984). Since 1994 (after 2 Belgen broke up), he's active as Esta Loco, a Flamenco-Pop band, where he provides over a dozen acoustic instruments.
Adam Ant (25 Jan 2017):
Adam Ant’s guitarist and musical director, Tom Edwards has died on January 25th at Kennedy Hospital in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
Adam Ant explained that Edwards was actually on tour with Ant’s North American Kings of the Wild Frontier tour, which began on January 22nd. With the sudden and mysterious death, they suspect that it was a heart failure.
Mott the Hoople (22 Jan 2017): Pete Overend Watts, the original bassist for Mott the Hoople, has died on January 22nd. The bass guitarist (originally guitarist) appeared with singer Stan Tippins on The Doc Thomas Group, before using the Mott the Hoople name, with new singer Ian Hunter.
Watts became the staple of Mott the Hoople’s lineup throughout the years, even appearing as late as 2013 when they went on a reunion tour.
The Roches (21 Jan 2017):
Maggie Roche, the eldest of the three sisters act The Roches has passed away.
The band made an official announcement:
Friends, my dear, beautiful sister Maggie passed away today after a long struggle with cancer. She was a private person, too sensitive and shy for this world, but brimming with life, love, and talent. I want to let you know how grateful she was to everyone who listened and understood her through her music and her songs. After decades of singing, writing, traveling and performing together, we spent the last month and a half helping each other through her final journey, now I have to let her go. I’m heartbroken. I adored her. She was smart, wickedly funny, and authentic ~ not a false bone in her body ~ a brilliant songwriter, with a distinct unique perspective, all heart and soul. It’ll be hard for me to carry on without her.
Greg Kihn Band (16 Jan 2017):
As you know, I am a pretty big fan of The Greg Kihn Band. They have two big hit songs, ‘The Breakup Song’ and ‘Jeopardy’... and both of them were co-written by Steve Wright! We’ve just learned that Wright recently died of a heart attack, according to
gregkihn.com.
Get Smart (13 Jan 2017): Dick Gautier, who played Hymie the Robot and Rodimus Prime, has passed away at the 85 on January 13th. Did you know he started his career as a comic and singer? His singing ability led him to being cast as Conrad Birdie in the original Broadway theatre production of
Bye Bye Birdie.
Peter Sarstedt (08 Jan 2017): We noted that singer/songwriter Peter Sarstedt died last week on January 8th at the age of 75.
The beloved English songwriter was briefly known as
Peter Lincoln, before changing it back to his given surname, standing beside his two musician brothers: Eden Kane and Clive “Robin” Sarstedt.
Perhaps his best-known song is ‘Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?’, which topped the UK charts in 1969.
The Contours (06 Jan 2017): Sylvester Potts, member of The Contours has died on January 6. Potts joined the band in 1961, just in time for the band’s most famous hit song ‘Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance)’ on Motown's Gordy Records. The song was originally meant for The Temptations, but the group had actually left Motown’s Hitsville Records by this time. Sylvester Potts stayed with the band until 2004, when he left to form his own group called Upscale... but began billing themselves as “The Contours”. Of course, original band member Joe Billingslea sued Potts... as a result two bands formed: Joe Billingslea and The Contours and The Contours featuring Sylvester Potts.

The co-writer of the hit 'na na na na hey hey hey goodbye' lyrics died aged 75 in a hospice but not before one final professional thrill when Congress chanted his lyrics last month.
Gary DeCarlo, the lead singer of Steam passed away while in hospice in Connecticut with his wife by his side after battling lung cancer, a close friend revealed on Wednesday.
He is best known for the 1969 hit song Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye, which was foisted back into the public consciousness when Democrats sang it to Republicans in Congress in May while they waved goodbye to them after the House passed the American Health Care Act, which replaced Obamacare.
Although this was meant as a taunt to Republicans, insinuating that repealling Obamacare would lead to their removal from government, the use of the song in Congress proved an uplifting and positive moment for Mr DeCarlo.

Although he was confined to a hospice with lung cancer at the time, and had been out of the limelight for many years, the songs resurgence brought him public attention once more.
He said He was thrilled when the Democrats sang his song, not for partisan reasons but because “it’s exposure,” he told MyNewsLa.

Gary's friend Pat Horgan said the singer's lung cancer had spread all over his body.
'I try to stay positive,' DeCarlo said in 2016. 'But there is always the thought that you won’t get cured.'
In March he wrote on Facebook: 'Just came back from seeing my doctor, I have to start 10 weeks of radiation on my left side now. My chest and groin areas. I’m starting to feel like a bagel. This is gonna take a lot longer [than] I thought.'

On June 11 he added: 'Guess who has a fractured shoulder to go along [with] all the other medical problems.'
In 2016 a GoFundMe account was opened to help pay for his medical expenses.
The note read: 'It is important to Ronn, Pat, myself and many friends to do everything possible to help Gary and his family through this dreaded disease. I spoke with Gary a few minutes ago and he is in good spirits and will keep us updated on his treatment and condition.'
Over $6,000 was raised.
