Sunflower Bean just headlined the 7th Street Entry last week, October 24th.
Lazy Scorsese (Oz, Dave, Chris, Ryan, and Tyler) opened up the show. The psychedelic band previewed some tracks from their recent Grigio EP (which came out days earlier). The band was serious, particularly singer Oz, who looked intense, like Charles Manson.
Grigio featured their new single ‘Soulshaper’, which was recently picked by City Pages as one of the stand-out MN videos for Halloween.
I’m not going to lie, but the biggest buzz band I’ve seen in a long time, has got to be The Lemon Twigs. Almost immediately, the dancefloor was filled to the walls of curious onlookers and fans who thought the Lemon Twigs was the best thing since sliced bread. They were pretty good, actually, sounding a bit like the Beatles and a bit like Belle & Sebastian (the orchestra-ness) if they came from the 70’s. It’s such a great sound.
The New York band consists of two brothers Brian D’Addario (guitar, keyboards, vocals, drums, horns, strings) and Michael D’Addario (guitar, keyboards, vocals, drums), with help from Danny Ayala (keyboards), and Megan Zeankowski (bass).
With only one album, Do Hollywood, out on 4AD, the band, not surprisingly played almost the entire thing. They did play one new song called ‘Queen of My School’, which, as of this writing, has not been officially recorded. Very excited to have caught the Lemon Twigs on this tour, they will likely double their fanbase the next time they come back to town.
As for psych trio Sunflower Bean (drummer Jacob Faber, bassist Julia Cumming, and guitarist Nick Kivlen), we’ve been loving them for a while. Let me tell you about their first Minnesota appearance, opening for DIIV in 2015: everyone who showed up early fell in love with the band. I was there to witness as newfound fans were taking selfies with the band, etc. The best part is that fans were saying “keep the change” when they bought merchandises from the band. I overheard Nick Kivlen saying that Minnesota is the nicest state they’ve ever played at and that he’s never seen such reactions.
Like their second appearance in April 2016, a mere six months ago, the band’s set and sound remains the same, playing the majority of their debut album Human Ceremony (Fat Possum). Like last time, the band is completely confident on stage, with music being upbeat and faster for the live shows.
