South Carolina band NEEDTOBREATHE is back on the road in support of a new album, Hard Love (Atlantic Records) and the newest installment of their Tour de Compadres, a road show featuring friends both old and new, to play alongside, stopping in St. Paul, at a sold-out Roy Wilkins Auditorium.
The four-band evening got started with a short set from Cleveland blues rock band Welshly Arms, who brought a soulful start (and crowded stage) to begin things. A look at the tracklist from their 2014 Covers EP best encapsulates their style and influences (Sam and Dave’s ‘Hold On I’m Coming’; Deep Purple’s ‘Hush’; and Chambers Brothers’ ‘Time Has Come Today’ among others).
The core members (Sam Getz- Electric Guitar; Brett Lindemann- Keys; Jimmy Weaver- Bass; Mikey Gould- Drums; Bri and Jon Bryant- Vocals) were rounded out by additional singers and players (with a handful joining the headliners for their set too) and shone on originals like the new single ‘Bad Blood’ and set-closing ‘Three Dark Days’.
Virginia band Parachute was next, with a taut but peppy twenty-five minute set culled from the new album, Wide Awake (Vanguard Records) released this March, and a few radio hits; most of which, the crowd seemed to have recognized.
The group’s core trio (Will Anderson-vocals, guitar, piano; Johnny Stubblefield-drums; and Kit French- keyboards, vocals, sax) has played the area numerous times, and (spoiler alert) revealed they’d be back this coming March for anyone that wanted to see more, or who may have missed this show.
Starting with the new ‘Waking Up’, the band moved next into their biggest single to date, 2009’s ‘She is Love’ before working in a Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell cover (the same one we heard in this very building the previous night from Us the Duo), in with their own ‘Can’t Help’, from 2013. The crowd happily sang along on cue with the two final songs, including closer ‘Didn’t See it Coming’, and gave the band a warm reception.
Another familiar face to the area is Oregon native and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Mat Kearney, who took a break from creation of the follow up to last year’s Just Kids (Republic Records), to join the Tour de Compadres. Kearney’s generous fifty-minute set was testament to his own headlining potential in a venue this size and he made the most of his time.
With a band that included Minneapolis resident Tyler Burkum on guitar (ex-Audio Adrenaline, Leagues) , Kearney’s set sounded robust and much more electronic and full sounding, than his initial folk singer-songwriter vibe. Before ‘Nothing Left to Lose’, Kearney feigned a quick verse of ‘Purple Rain’ before quickly discarding it, admitting he’s never played the song before, then redeemed himself by declaring us the “coolest cold city” in America.
His own ‘Down’ was mashed up with part of his cover of ‘Ride’, Kearney either trying to connect with a younger audience and/or proof that twenty one pilots has clearly hit the mainstream zeitgeist. Vari-lites went crazy as ‘Runaway’ melted into a U2 cover, Kearney broke out his dance moves on ‘Heartbeat’, and ‘Ships in the Night’ ended his set as the band sailed off stage.
NEEDTOBREATHE, led by brothers Bear and Bo Rinehart, is clearly ready for the big time, and already brought along the production, songs, and show pacing to get there. The band’s fan base has grown steadily in the last several years, with Bear reminiscing at one point about the many area venues they’ve played along the way (Turf, First Ave, Varsity, Skyway, Cabooze) and has broadened their audience, way beyond their mainly Christian beginnings.
In addition to added players on stage, arena-sized lighting flooded the venue and a huge vertical video screen behind the band captured multi-camera angles of the action, as well as showed perfectly sync’d conceptual footage, for several songs.
Bo dressed as Max Headroom for a quirky taped show intro and then the opening ‘Great Night’ ideally set the tone for their ninety-minute performance, with singer/guitarist Bear out front in black leather jacket and hat-less, so everyone could clearly see him emote during the most passionate songs.
“This is the biggest crowd we’ve ever played to here” singer Bear said, before strumming the intro of ‘Difference Maker’, with the most devout in the crowd, raising both hands to heaven. ‘Money & Fame’ had high production values with a barrage of video images, and then as Bear introduced the band, they launched into ‘Whatta Man’, as his brother Bo was introduced.
The new album is filled with joy and a desire to dance, as evidenced with ‘Happiness’ where Bo invited the crowd to sub in on the chorus, for the choir that is on the record, which they easily obliged. Things slowed down with a mid-set acoustic set, including 2014’s ‘Oh Carolina’, but tempo was quickly brought back up again.
The main set ended with a growing bang, as the opening intro from the new album, ‘Mountain, Part 1’ led into the title track, finishing with a rising ‘Drive All Night’ from 2011, with a bit of a Killers cover thrown in for good measure.
Heart was on his sleeve as singer Bear emerged solo behind a grand piano to begin the encore, saying how grateful he and the band were, for the fans to follow them for so long, before launching into a bare but emotional piano medley, ending achingly with 2009’s ‘Something Beautiful’ and its lyric, “consume me like a fire, 'cause I just want something beautiful”.
The stage then crowded with opening band members and a local choir for the four-band evening’s closer, ‘Brother’, which had everyone out of their seats, and singing along as well.
And with that, NEEDTOBREATHE and its Tour de Compadres conquered yet another (and largest yet) area venue, clearly headed for even bigger stages, and with everything already in place, to do so.
