True to form, Bambara tore the roof off. They were joined by a dynamite guest guitarist, freeing up singer/noise master Reid Bateh to work his wizardry with microphone and effects. In his customary black attire, Bateh crashed to his knees and brought forth eerie sounds from an array of effects pedals, falling onto his back whenever the mood struck and prowling the stage, much to the audience’s delight.
Muuy Biien took the stage to kick off the release of their new album, Age Of Uncertainty. This new material expertly combines Muuy Biien’s customary post-punk sound with avant-garde jazz. Saxophone, violin and piano add new and complex layers to the music. In light of these additions, this live performance featured some special guests, including Elephant 6’s own John Fernandes on violin.
The band played 8 songs off Age Of Uncertainty, as well as some older favorites and a couple of songs unfamiliar to me.
Singer Joshua Evans strutted and fretted about the stage in his characteristic frenzy, and the eager crowd was riveted. Shaking his head from side to side, at times he resembled a madman with hair disarrayed and tongue lolling; at other times he looked positively beatific, depending on the song.
Muuy Biien put on an incredible show, and the addition of 2 violins and a keyboard gave them an even fuller live sound. The new songs sounded just as good in concert as on the record. Age Of Uncertainty is an enticingly sinister work of avant-garde genius, sung with a sneer. It’s now available everywhere.
