Age of Uncertainty was recorded by the redoubtable David Barbe at Chase Park Transduction in Athens.
This album is a bit of a departure from Muuy Biien’s previous work. The vocals are less staccato and more melodic than before. But don’t expect frontman Joshua Evans to dispense with his sarcastic pout and (for lack of a better term) punk vocalizations; they’re still present and accounted for.
The music has a fuller, less stripped-down sound than other Muuy Biien releases. It’s played at a slower pace, but still fast enough to pack a satisfying punch.
The rhythm section is a perfectly tight marriage of drums and bass that stands out and doesn’t get lost in the mix. Age of Uncertainty sports some seriously funky bass lines and jazzy, experimental percussion. An excellent avant-jazz saxophone can be heard at many points in this recording. Piano adds a new, complex layer to the music. Underwater surf-rock reverb is heard on many of the guitar tracks, and some of the songs feature acoustic guitar and violin. The underlying dark feel of Age of Uncertainty is classic Muuy Biien.
Age Of Uncertainty is an enticingly sinister work of avant garde genius, sung with a sneer.
Must-hear tracks: “Sike Song,” “Another Chore,” “Robbed.”
Muuy Biien is currently touring in support of Age Of Uncertainty. The record release party will take place at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA on November 4th.
