I don't know what I was expecting from a band named Goblin Cock but what it ended being was nowhere near what I had imagined in my head. I imagined something brutal and heavy. Something full of pageantry and seriousness. I definitely got the pageantry I was expecting but that's the only thing I got right.
As they were setting up, the members of the band were dressed in matching yellow shirts, the same yellow baseball hats on their heads, and tour laminates hanging from their necks. This is definitely not what I expected a band named Goblin Cock to look like but hey, I was into it. The members took their time setting up the stage, getting the multiple strobe lights in the perfect spot and running the fog machine just enough to add a spooky little feeling to the room.
The band members left the stage but quickly returned dressed in all black robes complete with black hoods. Now this is what I was thinking when envisioning a band named Goblin Cock. They got in their stances and I braced myself for what was sure to be something heavy and out of this world.
Out of this world, it was. Heavy, it was not. The music didn't match the sinister look of this band at all and I absolutely loved that. Here these guys were, dressed in all black robes and masks, surrounded by too much fog and bright strobe lights, singing songs about Sesame Street's Mr. Snuffleupagus... talk about mind games. Their music was not as heavy as I thought it would be. It almost had an old school metal feel to it with some good old fashioned guitar solos and understandable lyrics... again, not what I was expecting at all but it was great.
The music blurred stoner-sludge metal with a bit of thrash and black metal. Each song seemed to have a different feel to it but they all just seemed fun. It seemed like the guys in the band were having fun and it was obvious that the head banging crowd was having fun as well. It was so refreshing to see a band on stage not taking themselves too seriously, but still showing off their talent. I'm not trying to make these guys sounds like a joke band at all (although they are signed to the same label as Lil' Bub the cat). The members of this band are super talented (the singer is actually Rob Crow from Pinback) and, although some of their songs are about funny lyrics, there's no denying that these guys are not just here to mess around.
Goblin Cock's newest album, Necronomidonkeykongimicon came out on September 2nd of this year via Joyful Noise recordings.
