Athens Popfest 2016 proved to be a rip-roaring good time. Not even the inclement weather which unfortunately kept headliner Daniel Johnston from flying to Athens to perform could dampen the festival’s spirit. It was really heartwarming to hear so many artists thank festival organizer Mike Turner from onstage during their sets. He handled any and all surprise setbacks like a champ. This year’s lineup really was a gracious, down-to-earth yet amazingly talented collection of musicians.
Athens Popfest spanned a 4-day period from August 10 – 13 and took place at 3 venues, all conveniently located a stone’s throw away from one another. Things began every day at Little Kings, proceeded to The World Famous, and culminated at the Georgia Theatre.

On August 10, the festival kicked off with an Elephant-6-style bang. During the daytime, Robert Schneider and John Ferguson of
The Apples in Stereo- joined onstage by many special guests including
The Foresters and Robert’s son Max- captivated the crowd with the lovely, lilting harmonies of their music project
Spaceflyte.

That night,
Dressy Bessy generated some infectious positivity. Tammy Ealom’s kicks, leaps and expressive face made it impossible to take your eyes off of her. Dressy Bessy can immediately pull you out of the deepest funk and put you right in the middle of a good mood whirlwind.
Day 1 wrapped with a sonic boom as Athens’ own
Elf Power put the rock in our faces and took us to magical places.
