Violent Femmes’s second night at First Avenue took place last night, July 6th.
This is just a quickie post to get setlist and some photos of the show online. More details later.
Brett Newski |
Briefly:
Brett Newski opened up the show with his improv-ish songs. Very fun guy, really witty. Highlight of his set was getting an audience member to help play harmonica during ‘In Between Exits’. He ended his brief 30-min set with ‘D.I.Y.’... and newfound fans in the front started to sing along to his catchy lyrics, “
I’m D.I.Y., I’m punk as f***. Don’t need your money, I don’t want your love.” Newski also tend to swap out lyrics to make his song more personal and timely. For example, he name dropped The Replacements in the mixtape lyrics on ‘D.I.Y.’
Also, Newski, there were definitely a lot more people last night and tonight at First Avenue than “four people in St. Louis”.

Violent Femmes are back at it again. This time, it looks like they are going back to their typical setlist. The key differences from last night’s show and tonight was that Gordon Gano is now using his old banjo (the other one went out of commission last night) and some songs were replaced. I’m sad to see that ‘Gimme The Car’ is not on the set - however ‘Waiting for the Bus’ was a good replacement. That song was done in a weird saxophone/jazz style that is quite different from the recording or demo. ‘American Music’ closed out their regular set and new song ‘Memory’ moved to the encore. Of course, the finale is always ‘Add it Up’, which is always a fan favorite closing song.
Oddly enough, ‘Kiss Off’ moved to the front, right after their biggest hit song ‘Blister In the Sun’.
Also: in addition to the horns section of Blaise, Todd and Mike... we also got ‘local girl’ Mona on tenor saxophone.
Again more details later.
