Sure, Big Thief just played the 7th Street Entry, not so long ago on June 15, with Adia Victoria. However, now as headliner, the Brooklyn’s quartet (Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, James Krivchenia, Max Oleartchik) can afford to take time to play selections from their debut Masterpiece (Saddle Creek), filling out a nearly an hour set on their Triple Rock Social Club headlining gig on Tuesday night.
Opening the show was local Victor's Door, who was added to the bill about four days before the event. The trio (singer Emily Landwehr, drummer DJ Landwehr, and bassist Jack Stanek) tested out some new “VDs” (Victor's Door Songs) songs from their recent recording at Signaturetone Recording.
Based on their earlier 7th Street Entry appearance, when I said that Big Thief’s singer Adrianne Lenker “looked and sounded painfully shy the whole time, especially when she tried and hide behind her hair.” And I can confirm this with the Triple Rock Social Club appearance, when right before they started their set, Lenker requested the venue to turn the lights all the way down, resulting in a dimly lit show.
Although shy, distant, and often staring at her feet, when not singing, Lenker did share some personal things about herself - for example, bassist Max Oleartchik Jack Stanek (Victor's Door) is actually Lenker’s step brother. Or that Big Thief’s secret band member is called “Martha”, an oregano plant (see photo).
Starting their set with a solo ‘Lorraine’ performance, the band started to fill in the music as the song came along. Right at the start, it felt like they were more “jammy”, stretching out their songs with extended instrumental (something that they couldn’t do as a support band, but as headliner, that’s a different story).
With only one album, the band proceeded to play the majority of Masterpiece, however, midway in their set, guitarist Buck Meek sang a solo song on acapella, which I can only guess is called ‘Georgia’. Like Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek actually released a few solo releases, prior to joining Big Thief.
Big Thief recently appeared in Weathervane’s Shaking Through music video for “Mother”, produced by Here We Go Magic’s Luke Temple. Watch it on weathervanemusic.org.
