They didn’t mention Cat Power’s album and title track ‘The Greatest’, which I have always felt was a nod to Ali because of the boxing gloves on the album cover and the song lyrics, “Once I wanted to be the greatest. Two fists of solid rock, with brains that could explain any feeling.”
Also: the father of Jarvis Cocker (of Pulp), Mac Cocker recently passed away, according to doublej.net.au. Apparently Cocker was a radio DJ for Double J (currently owned by Triple J).
Dave Swarbrick of the English folk rock band Fairport Convention died at the age of 75 due to emphysema, according to theguardian.com. Universally known as Swarb, he played the fiddle in Fairport Convention. Swarbrick left Fairport in 1981 and in 1983, moved to Northamptonshire, and formed a new acoustic folk band, Whippersnapper.
UPDATE: Surfer Blood's guitarist Thomas Fekete died on 30 May 2016, but we just learned about it now. Fekete was forced to leave the band in 2009 when he learned of his terminal cancer. Fekete passed away at the young age of 27, according to spin.com. We are big fans of the band and previously caught them post-Fekete, with Art Brut in November 2009.
