After a five-year hiatus, Swedish indie rockers Peter Bjorn & John (Peter Morén, Björn Yttling, and John Eriksson) are back with Breakin’ Point, released this month via INGRID, Warner Sweden and Kobalt Label Services. The trio stopped by the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis last Thursday to support the new record.
Opening up the show was Whosah, who was a very last minute addition to the bill. The five-piece (Spencer, Dallas, Dave, Mack, Nate) had a big pop sound. As we previously mentioned, they played tracks from their sophomore EP Work, including the lead single ‘Ghost Town’.
Singer Spencer Grimes seemed comfortable on stage, doing high energy dance moves and singing to their upbeat music. I don’t think the band’s music can ever be described as depressing.
As we have already previously discussed on the podcast, Peter Bjorn & John blew up with their song ‘Young Folks’. Originally released in late 2006, but touring promotion in the USA didn’t take place until 2007 when they made their way to First avenue on 09 May 2007 with Au Revoir Simone and Fujiya & Miyagi. For that tour, they had Heather D’Angelo from Au Revoir Simone show up on the encore to sing ‘Young Folks’, undoubtedly their biggest hit.
‘Young Folks’ was so uncharacteristic of PB&J, especially because the single was a duet with The Concretes’ Victoria Bergsman and requires constant whistling for the melody. Reading interviews with the band, they have expressed that ‘Young Folks’ was both a blessing and a curse. People have a misconception of the band, but at the same time, they’ve gained new listeners.
Anyway, after a five-year break (their last album Gimme Some came out in 2011), to give room for various solo projects: Peter’s solo albums, Björn’s “Yttling Jazz”, and John’s project Hortlax Cobra. With all that out of the way and a fresh perspective, the trio is back with their catchiest album yet, Breakin’ Point.
Joining the trio were new touring band members, Klaus and Freya, both doing various keys and extra percussions... which is reflective of Breakin’ Point’s synth-heavy new sound. The extra production really adds a fuller sound to BJ&J.
As you can see from their Minneapolis set list, there’s plenty of older classic songs with the newer Breakin’ Point songs. The title track ‘Breakin’ Point’, done very early in their set, does feature a whistling intro, which is reminisce of ‘Young Folks’, but not as pronounced.
They had a mini-European theme midset, starting with fan-favorites ‘Amsterdam’ and following with ‘Paris 2004’. The two back-to-back Writer's Block songs were incredibly well-received by the audience.
The sequel to ‘Paris 2004’ was new song ‘Do-Si-Do’, which was described as “square-dancing” and “ABBA-esque disco”, and recalls a city that they described as “the Texas of Sweden” because of greasers and moonshine drinking hillbillies.
‘Eyes’ from Gimme Some was super powerpop and begged for a singalong. This was followed by another Gimme Some song ‘Dig a Little Deeper’.
The best song from Breakin’ Point, ‘Dominos’ was played next. This inspired some audience hand-clapping and featured a great upbeat piano part. The song is also PB&J’s latest single, so this should hit radio airwaves fairly soon.
Of course, for the faithful, ‘Young Folks’ was saved for the second song on the encore. They did do a little tease prior to ‘It’s Your Call’, to let us know that yes, ‘Young Folks’ is coming. By the time they were setting up for ‘Young Folks’, the fans were all chanting “Freya! Freya! Freya!” as Freya emerged from the background to take center stage to help sing the duet.
