The trio rocked hard, playing selections of their previous album Second Sun and debut record If I Stay Awake on their 40-min set.
Singer Kenny Stiegele often reminded the audience that they were from Ohio, as if they were really proud of that fact.
It was only a year ago when we saw the indie rock band Catfish and the Bottlemen (Ryan "Van" McCann; Johnny “Bondy” Bond; Benji Blakeway; “Sideshow” Bob Hall) at the smaller 7th Street Entry in February 2015 and then upgraded to Varsity Theater in June ... now that they’re better known, they’ve packed the mainroom of over 2,000 fans... a massive difference than their first appearance of a 250-capacity venue.
Although, Catfish and the Bottlemen released their debut album in 2014 (which reached #10 on the UK albums chart), the band actually formed seven years earlier. As McCann previously mentioned, “Thank you for selling this place out, it took us seven years to fill a place like this in England,” indicating that for many years, the band struggled to find an audience.
After relentless touring (Glastonbury, Latitude, Reading, T in the Park, etc.), England finally recognized the band and awarded them the Brit Award for British Breakthrough act on 24 February 2016.
Now with their second album The Ride (Capitol) written and released, the band expanded their show to over an hour with new songs - with exceptions of previous hits, like ‘Kathleen’, played early in their set.
Based on the terrific turnout for their shows, we’re going to assume the band will be back again. The band has already announced their October (“Rocktober”) tour dates ... perhaps at the last minute, they will put Minneapolis on their itinerary (perhaps October 11th?)
