Wild Nothing (aka Jack Tatum) just headlined the Triple Rock Social Club on Monday, May 2nd, in support of his third album Life of Pause.
Charlie Hilton opened up the show. Charlie is a female singer with a backing band that made me feel like I was by the beach in California or something. The music was calm and soothing throughout the set but still had some sort of energy to it that is unexplainable. Her haunting voice was absolutely beautiful and enough to stop you dead in your tracks. You can check out her newest album, Palana, out now via Captured Tracks.
Whitney was the second act to play Monday night. The second they took the stage, there was something familiar about them. Come to find out that two members of this band (Max Kakacek and Julian Ehrlich) are actually former members of The Smith Westerns (RIP). These guys had joined forces with members of a few other Chicago groups to form Whitney.
Whitney's music is groovy and poppy but it's so much more than that and hard to categorize. You have a trumpet in back blaring along to the driving keyboards that are going on. You have the two keyboards battling it out in a war of beautiful sounds. Then you have the guitars and bass doing their thing and acting as the glue for the group. All of this was exciting enough to watch but then you had the singer/ drummer (Julien Ehrlich) front and center. There was really no chance of me watching anything but him.
The way he is able to drum and sing with a steady and quite beautiful voice without getting winded and out of breath just baffles me. He sat there for a good forty minutes playing non-stop and his voice never faltered. His voice belongs in a boy band but his look and charm belongs in an indie rock band. It was the perfect mix of the scenes and kept their set relevant and their band current.
Whitney's debut album Light Upon the Lake is due out early next month but was available for purchase at the show last night. Also, if you order the album online (in CD/ vinyl/ or cassette form) you will receive it May 22nd, two weeks prior to the true release date.
The show was headlined by Wild Nothing from Virginia. This band is just as hard to categorize as Whitney but they even throw in a little 80's synth pop to the mix.
Wild Nothing is the brainchild of Jack Tatum (Jack & the Whale/ Facepaint). Tatum is the founding member, songwriter and the sole performer on Wild Nothing's albums but he brings a group with him on the road. This adds a strange dynamic to the group because each member seems to interpret the songs differently which makes the music much deeper than you would think a group like this would be.
Wild Nothing has three full length releases out including Life of Pause which was just released on Captured Tracks in February of this year. The group did a great job of playing songs from each album. It was nice that you couldn't really tell what album or era each song came from. It all blended nicely and let you know that this band is staying true to their style and not going anywhere anytime soon.
