Welsh singer Cate Le Bon is currently on tour in support of her fourth solo album Crab Day (Drag City), stopping by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis on Tuesday night.
Mega Bog (aka Erin Birgy) opened up the show. I wasn’t sure if this was her last night on tour, but for sure, she confessed that it was the last night that she would play with her live band: James Krivchenia on shaker, Matt Bachmann on bass, Kevin Romain on drums, and Derek Baron on flute. Birgy was experiencing some discomforting toothache (asking if there was a doctor in the house to pull out one of her tooth...), but if she was in pain, she didn’t show it on stage.
Normally (especially on recorded albums), Mega Bog is more ‘saxy’-sounding, but unfortunately they didn’t have a live saxophonist on in the band. Musically, they sounded a little like Kate Bush with organic chimes and flutes.
It was an incredibly healthy turn out for the Los Angeles, by the way of Wales, Cate Le Bon.
Words must have spread since her last appearance in Minneapolis, in January 2014... despite the fact that Cate Le Bon physically could not say the words ‘Minneapolis’. Le Bon, in her thick Welsh accent said, “Wish ah could sae your city’s name. Ah just carn’t say it.”
The first half of her set was almost exclusively songs from Crab Day, including the first three songs ‘Crab Day’, ‘Love Is Not Love’ and ‘Wonderful’ (which also appeared in the same order on the Drag City album).
The second half of her set, starting with ‘Are You With Me Now?’ were mostly from her last album Mug Museum.
Originally the show was a seated event, but when she arrived for soundcheck, she decided the chairs had to go. Only the side had chairs, the center was empty for fans to move and dance around. At the show, Le Bon seemed pleased at her decision, as there were plenty of fans dancing - especially near the end of her hour plus set.
Normally, during her set, she would end with ‘What’s Not Mine’ (Le Bon even announcing it as “this is the last song”)... but after the song ended... for a brief moment, the band considered heading off the stage... but instead Le Bon just started playing ‘I Can’t Help You’ (typically should be the encore song).
