Norwegian artist Jarle Bernhoft (or simply known by his surname Bernhoft, or sometime stylized as Bern/Hoft) stopped by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis last Monday (May 16th) as part of his special US tour in support of his new EP Stop/Shutup/Shout It Out (Big Picnic Records).
Opening up the show was Nashville’s Jonny P (not to be confused with Chicago’s Johnny P of Do Or Die). The soul singer promised that he’ll have a full band when he comes back “in the fall”. For Monday’s show, he is joined by his guitarist (normally part of a full band).
Jonny P played a few songs from his debut EP Right to You, including ‘Shine On’, plus some forthcoming songs from a new project he’s working on for 2016. Undoubtedly we’ll hear more when he comes back to town.
Bernhoft, and his full live band The Shudderbugs, started their set slightly earlier than scheduled, which was just fine for his dedicated fans - standing up close to the stage and dancing to the soulful, upbeat music. Throughout the show, his fans were shouting Norwegian comments to Bernhoft, which Bernhoft was happy to respond in kind. Since I didn’t speak the language, it often felt like an insider club, hearing them interact. I’m sure they were just saying words of encouragements like, “you rock” or “will you marry me,” etc.
Just to give you a little backstory, Bernhoft first came to our attention when he was crownded #1 selling Norwegian artist in 2013, but the truth is he’s been recording music for nearly a decade before with Explicit Lyrics and Span.
In December 2014, Bernhoft’s album Islander was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album for the 2015 Grammy Awards, which was unheard of, since he was first non-American artist to have been nominated in the 20 year-history of this US-dominated category.
Both Islander and his 2011 album Solidarity Breaks hit #1 on the Norwegian charts, so Bernhoft is a big deal in Norway.
The encore started with a solo performance of ‘Falter’ (his alternate song, according to his setlist, was ‘Sunday’), a rather sad, slow song. This was followed with the band joining on for the last two songs, ‘Choices’ and his hit song ‘C’mon Talk’.
