A little inside baseball, but this show started really late: Blanck Mass wasn’t scheduled until 10:30pm. The reason for this, as explained to me by the First Avenue staff, was that the floor manager didn’t want the sound to bleed through the walls. Even when 10:30pm rolled around, Blanck Mass was not allowed to play until after Lake Street Dive finished their set at the mainroom next door! The result was that Blanck Mass did not take the stage until closer to 10:55pm. On a Friday or Saturday, this wouldn’t be much of a problem, but on a Thursday... it’s a different story.
When Blanck Mass (aka Benjamin John Power) started his set, you realized maybe the management was right to schedule him after Lake Street Dive, as the song started out loud. Then it got even louder. He basically played his latest Dumb Flesh set without any breaks. Songs blend into each other... making for a nice musical journey.
To keep it interesting, Blanck Mass had a projection showing computer-generated images or colors, often synchronize with his music. For example, fast/twitchy songs will show off frantic colors and very quick images, etc.
If you like experimental noises and exploring a different kind of music, like the kind that F***k Button is known for, you’ll feel right at home with Blanck Mass’ music. Blanck Mass is currently in Austin, Texas, for SXSW. He’ll be at Rockshaw Stop in San Francisco on March 18th, followed by a house show in Los Angeles the next day.
