Jerrid, the drummer of Royal'z, has been bugging me for months to come see his band. I've bought numerous tickets from him for shows where they are opening but, unfortunately, I have never made it to a show in time to see them play. They typically open up national shows which means they are one of the first bands to play in an eleven band line-up and, let's be honest, I'm too old to be standing around for six to seven hours at a show.
Last night made the wait more than worth it. Royal'z absolutely blew me away with their music. What they play is not what I would typically listen to. Their music has more of a rap-rock feel than I typically like but it works. The amount of energy they had was perfect even though the crowd barely moved. Some bands would start to lose it if they couldn't get the crowd moving but these guys just kept on keeping on and never faltered.
Unfortunately, Royal'z had a short set, just due to lack of material. They have only been in the scene for about a year now and only have a couple of songs at this point. That being said, each song was played to perfection and you were able to see the talent of this band shine even though the set was so short. I can't wait to see what these guys do in the future. They are a talented band with a lot of drive and are sure to be going somewhere.
From Concept to Chronicle was one of the openers that I had never heard of before. I'm sure they've been on a bill I've seen but I've never actually seen them before. They absolutely killed it. Usually I find bands that have two vocalists to be hard to follow because it's so muddy and there's too much going on. These guys were able to find a balance and pulled off the two vocalist thing flawlessly. These guys will be opening the Chelsea Grinn show at Amsterdam in a couple of weeks. These guys are super deserving of that show and I can't wait to see them again!
Another band that I had never heard of before but completely blew me away was Roads of Glass. Here's the catch though, their singer had food poisoning and was unable to make it to the show so Louis from By The Thousands filled in. This is great and just shows how much a family this scene truly is. That being said, there's also a downside. Louis has a very distinctive voice and style. The second he started singing (maybe shouting would be a better word?) all I could hear was By The Thousands. Now don't get me wrong, the musicians of Roads of Glass were extremely talented and good but unfortunately, I was unable to get a good feel of them as a whole because the whole time I was just thinking By The Thousands. That being said, I look forward to seeing Roads of Glass with their singer and am sure I will not be disappointed.
