Buzzing singer-songwriter Tori Kelly stopped by the Mall of America’s main rotunda that Friday afternoon, for a brief acoustic set and meet and greet for a few of the lucky that arrived extra early for wristbands. Kelly was in town not so much to promote her own smash debut full-length, but a new Disney cover compilation called I Love Disney (Verve /Disney Records), for which she contributed a track.

Oddly, she didn’t do the song she contributed to the Disney album, ‘Colors of the Wind’ (from Pocahontas), maybe due to the song arrangement and trying to do it just solo with guitar, and instead concentrated on the songs most known from her June debut, Unbreakable Smile (Capitol/Schoolboy Records).
‘Where I Belong’ started the brief set followed by ‘Unbreakable Smile’, sounding more soulful and resonant, stripped to its essence. The buoyant ‘Nobody Love’ and closing ‘Should’ve Been Us’ were familiar to most, having already succeeded (and still in heavy rotation) on radio.
“I’m running out to words to describe…this is so rad”, Kelly said, her neck craning to see fans along the railings of all four mall levels. She even briefly stopped during her last song, noticing a snow machine just to her right showering the front rows with a dose of the (fake) white stuff.
Kelly continues on the road with a run of holiday radio concerts before heading across the pond in early February. But, for shoppers at the Mall of America on Black Friday, it was a most welcome break from the retail madness.
