The Ben Sollee and Mother Falcon collaboration tour, dubbed "The Fall Migration", just made their way north to Minneapolis' Cedar Cultural Center last Saturday.
The evening started off with a couple of Ben Sollee-penned songs, but thanks to the added 14-piece Mother Falcon ensemble, Sollee's quieter songs were transformed into an impressive wall of sound.

Sollee left the stage to let Mother Falcon to play a few of their songs. The large band (consisting of keys, accordion, two violinists, two cellists, upright bassist, two saxophonists, trumpeter, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and drummer) made it look fun and easy. Outside of orchestra, the band also really love video games. Hearing them live, you get the impression that many of their songs can fit into a modern role-playing or real-time strategy game (particularly Blizzard's Starcraft games, which "Day 9" song was all about).
The entire middle of their set were mostly Ben Sollee songs, but starting with an introduction of his upbringing. He demonstrated that he's classically trained (playing a snippet of J.S. Bach's "Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1: Prelude"), but had to adapt his style to play with his dad and uncle (playing a snippet of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me").
With help from the "Left Wing" of Mother Falcon (upright bass, sax, electric guitar, and drummer), Sollee played "You Don't Miss Your Water", followed by the "Right Wing" (accordion, acoustic guitar, and vocalist Diana "the Talon of Mother Falcon") for "Prettiest Tree On The Mountain".
When the rest of Mother Falcon joined Sollee on stage, they had put one some spooky face makeup, in the spirit of Halloween. They played a couple of covers, including a sad version of The Beach Boys' "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" and Ann Peebles' "I Can't Stand The Rain" (complete with tearing paper as part of the song).
