London's Wolf Alice recently made a successful return to a very well-attended First Avenue on Monday, October 5th.
It was incredible to see fans lining up outside the historic venue before the doors opened. They were hoping to catch a full night of music, but unfortunately, due to a transportation problems (read: their van broke down), Made Violent ended up missing their Minneapolis appearance. It is really a shame, because, as we've previously mentioned, this is an excellent band.
The other unfortunately thing was that the set times were not changed, the entertainment won't arrive until 1.45 hours later! That didn't stop fans from standing their grounds on a good view spot... as they patiently wait for Drenge. The (now) trio had great energy, playing their entire set in near-darkness.
We've seen Drenge before at the smaller 7th Street Entry in August 2014, and noted that they were a duo consisting of two brothers Eoin and Rory Loveless. It would seem that currently, the siblings added a bassist (and sometime guitarist) Rob Graham... which was a nice bonus to add to their music.
This is completely evident as the band entered onstage to very heavy bass of their introduction song "Undertow" and also when they were playing their set finale "Running Wild" and Graham's bassist did not work. Clearly the song was missing the funky bass, and Graham was looking incredibly frustrated on stage, almost ready to smash his guitar! When the sound engineer rushed on stage to swap out the offending bass, "Running Wild" sounded 1000% better with the bass - and the audience sent out a loud cheer of approval.
Since Drenge only has two albums, the set was a good half mix of the two albums. New songs from their latest Undertow (Infectious Records), included the problematic closing song, "Undertow", "Never Awake", "We Can Do What We Want" (or as written on their setlist "WCDWWW"), "Never Awake", and "Standing in the Cold".
Many of the audience were all clearly excited to see Wolf Alice, but had only recently became fans of the London band. Talking to some new fans, they regretted having missed the band's earlier appearance at the Turf Club in May 2015.
Although 2015 is the band's first US tour, the truth is, we've been writing about them since their debut single "Fluffy" in January 2013 and saw them at the Great Escape 2013. We all knew there was something special about this band, and is very happy to see that the rest of America have finally caught up.
Very few words were spoken between songs, even though all eyes were focused on singer/guitarist Ellie Rowsell and whatever she had to say. She seemed shy on stage, which is surprising because sometime she can really scream on some of their songs.
Although Rowsell handled all their songs, drummer Joel Amey actually stepped in to sing on "Swallowtail".
Wolf Alice's debut album My Love Is Cool is out now on Dirty Hit/RCA Records. The single "Moaning Lisa Smile" had enjoyed a top ten slot on Billboard Alternative Songs chart.
