Last night at First Avenue was the reunion show for Emiliana, Take Cover, and Four Letter Lie. You really couldn't beat that line-up even if you tried. It was a great mix of some of my new friends, some really good friends, and some bands I could only dream of seeing play live again.
The last time I saw Four Letter Lie live was probably in 2007 back in Des Moines, Iowa, at the House of Bricks. The last time I saw Emiliana was probably about the same time period and the same venue.
Last night was perfect. Both Four Letter Lie and Emiliana sounded just like they did eight years ago. I think that playing a live show is kind of like riding a bike. You never forget how to move on stage. You never forget how to play the songs. You never forget how to get the crowd going, and most importantly, you never forget how it feels to play a show like last night.
It wasn't sold out, but it was packed. Everyone was there to see their friends (all of these bands have connections to the Twin Cities), everyone was there to listen to some good music, and everyone was there to have a good time. I honestly have never seen First Avenue that packed for a "local" show (other than Doomtree).
It was such a great night after a week of sub-par shows. The bands played all of the songs I wanted to hear along with ones I had completely forgotten about and ones that I had never heard before. I was singing along to every word even though it had been years since I had heard these songs. They have been burned into my mind and I have no problem with that.
In Search of Solace is definitely a band to keep your eye on. They are a heavy band from here in the cities that should be on your radar. I have been hearing about them for a wee bit and seen them a couple of times but after last night, I can truly say that I see these guys going somewhere. Make sure you check them out and show them some love. They are very talented young men that are taking the local scene by storm.
The reunion bands were great, In Search of Solace was great, but that was not the highlight of my night....
I saw my boys in By The Thousands play the First Avenue mainroom. This is the same venue I saw Social Distortion play. The same stage that I saw Sage Francis play on. And there were my boys. Dustin, Louis, Adam, John, and Carlos playing on that same stage. What a great feeling. I am so super proud of those boys and are more than honored to call them my friends.
Last night was a great night. It was an awesome lineup. I saw bands I hadn't seen in years and saw my friends reach a level that left me speechless.
All the bands could say was, "Thank you!" All I could think of to say was "No, thank you! Thank you for being my friends, thank you for making music, thank you for making me feel alive."
