DIIV Setlist

New Bork City's DIIV recently headlined the Turf Club in St Paul (not Minneapolis), last night.
Sunflower Bean opened up the show, a little later than advertised because of technical difficulties. There was a good turnout for the opener, but obviously the venue was not entirely filled until DIIV came on stage. However, I think DIIV's singer/guitarist Zachary Cole Smith best summed it up, "If you missed [Sunflower Bean], you f***d up!"
The trio, vocals/bass Julia Cumming, vocals/guitars Nick Kivlen, and drummer Jacob Faber, sounded like everything you would love in shoegazing music: sugar sweet vocals from Julia, dreamy harmonizing with Nick, and just really strong guitars and effects.
For the crowd catching the band, they were completely in love with the band, as evident by looking over their merch table and seeing them sell, sign, and pose for photos with their newfound fans.
They actually played an additional song (not written on their setlist), which they called "Easy Access". Many of the songs on their set is said to be from their forthcoming album (in 2016), so the titles may or may not be finalized.
I believe this is their first time in Minneapolis, but based on strong support for Sunflower Bean, they will likely come back again.
Canadian shoegaze band No Joy was up next. By this time, the 21+ crowd started to closer to the stage.
Singer/guitarist Jasamine White-Gluz's vocals were often blended into the indistinguishable, drowning guitar noise that made it hard to really understand what she was singing. The fans knew, recognizing songs like the finale "E" from 2013's Wait to Pleasure.
Looking over their setlist (written on a paper plate), I was surprised to see that no songs from their latest More Faithful (Mexican Summer Records) was listed.
Apparently DIIV didn't do a soundcheck earlier, so they were doing it before their live set. Zachary seemed really relaxed and started saying "Soundcheck, Minneapolis!" Of course, the residents corrected him, "Oh sh** St Paul! I don't know the difference!"
Once the show actually started, Zachary would often mis-announced the band and what they city are from: Div to Die-v to D.I.I.V. to Dive from New Bork City to New Dork City. Clearly this was a running joke on this tour. The joke did run a little stale, especially after hearing it for the 15th time.
The shoegazing/indie rock band did not take themselves too seriously, and it shows. They're having a fun time, they don't care. If you look at their setlist, in fact, they mistakenly wrote "Short Thing" on it twice. Instead of omitting it, they decided to what the heck, just play it again, after announcing "Boy, have we got a surprise for you!"
The band's really evolved since we caught them in 2012 with Frankie Rose. Of course, they were still called Dive back then, but literally overnight (April 29, 2012), to avoid confusion with an established 1990s Belgian industrial group of the same name. Personally, I like the new DIIV name, even though Zachary was poking fun that no one can pronounced the name.
Starting 15 minutes later, because of Sunflower Bean's earlier technical difficulties, the band played a full hour before heading back stage and coming back for the inevitable encore.
