Blues/Jazz singer Lizz Wright recently made a rare double appearance at the Dakota Jazz Club on September 22 and 23rd, touring in promotion of her latest album Freedom & Surrender. Her last Dakota appearance was on February 23, 2011.
The house's introduction to Wright was pretty great, describing her voice as smoky and truly unique. Her voice carried the concert, but in typical jazz shows, the music also played a huge part, often improvising and extending the music beyond its original frame. In fact, the band had a full five minutes to warm up the stage for Wright to appear on stage.
The guitar and bass solos, which were done midway and near the end of her set, served as a nice intermission to let Wright take a break from lead vocals.
Of course, the majority of the set consisted of songs from her new album Freedom & Surrender, which critics have noticed was less jazz and more blues and R&B. Wright jokingly said that was because she paused too much during her songs.
Wright was also very particular about how the music sound, and always a perfectionist when it came to her voice. At the start of "Real Life Painting", there was a low sound that she was hearing that was throwing her off. She stopped the song and after a brief fix, they restarted the song.
Filling out the rest of their set were a couple of cover songs, including Neil Young's "Old Man", Nick Drake's "River Man" and Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (made popular by Roberta Flack). The latter song, Wright noted that it will appear as a bonus song on Freedom & Surrender, but she loved it so much that she said she'll make sure it will be available on her next wide release.
For the encore, Wright started with a traditional song "Amazing Grace", medley into "Song for Mia", before ending the whole thing with the title track from her debut album: "Salt".
