Norwegian singer, and performance artist, Jenny Hval recently brought her Apocalypse, girl show to Minneapolis' 7th Street Entry on Tuesday, September 1st.
Apology for lack of photos, as I have previously mentioned, my lens is broken. In the meantime, you will have to put up with my faulty drawings.
Opening up the show was Briana Marela from "the Pacific Northwest" (which is basically Seattle or Portland). The singer/songerwriter started her 30-min set about ten minutes after original set time... playing some tracks from her debut album All Around Us. The album, by her account, was originally recorded in 2013 in Iceland, but it was only recently released on Jagjaguwar.
While most of the songs were from All Around Us, Marela actually ended her set with Brownbear's "Feel What I Feel" (the 2010 recorded song actually featured Marela on vocals).
We've seen Jenny Hval before in 2014 and like any typical singer/songwriter show, it was almost forgettable. Hval's Apocalypse, girl show is completely different. The new show is part art, part performance, part spoken word, and part music. It wasn't the typical rock show, and it proved to be one of my favorite shows this year.
Coming on stage with a fitness ball, dressed in a one-sized too large sweatsuit, Jenny Hval explained that she was going for that "sad housewife at the gym look".
All the songs on this set was from her latest concept album Apocalypse, girl, but they're often not recognizable because Hval is also improvising random sentences, which sounded like broken poetry, but mixed with some background ambient/drone music.
Halfway into her set, Hval started slowly taking off her sweat top, followed by her sweat pants, revealing she is wearing a black leotard underneath. After laying the sweatsuit on the stage, Hval continued singing songs about sex, death, and depression.
The oddest thing, after Hval gets up from the floor, she proceeded to play Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" via her iPhone on the speakers. After hearing the excerpt of the Del Rey song, she then started to play another Apocalypse, girl song, "Heaven".
By the time the final song, "That Battle Is Over" is played and nearing its final conclusion, Jenny Hval started to take off her hair... revealing that she was wearing a wig the whole time.
Of course, having already seen Hval and knowing what her hair looked like, I wasn't surprised/was already expecting this, but if you had never seen Hval before, this could be quite a heart stopper. Even if you had anticipated the wig, you can't argue that this wasn't one of the most interesting "rock" show you have ever seen. I'm glad to have seen it, and I'm convinced everyone else at the show felt the same way.
