Thanks to Lollapalooza in Chicago,
The Kills decided to book a side gig at First Avenue in Minneapolis on Monday (August 3rd). Of course, being gone for four years, the show sold out.
Baby In Vain

I was pretty excited to check out Danish trio
Baby In Vain (Lola Hammerich, Benedicte Pierleoni and Andrea Thuesen), who was asked to open the show for The Kills. The duo must recognize something good in the band, as they play grungy, loud, black metal music in near-darkness.
Hearing their 30-min set of mostly songs, like "Muscles", from their forthcoming debut studio album (set for release in late 2015), you can easily see why the all-girls Copenhagen band drew comparison to other riot grrrls band like Sleater-Kinney and Babes in Toyland.
Although this was the trio's first time in Minneapolis, and you can tell this probably won't be their last appearance in the Twin Cities.
"We were talking earlier today, and agreed that this is our favorite venue," Alison, from
The Kills, said to a massive cheer from the audience.
The Kills |
It has been four years since The Kills was last seen at First Avenue (05 May 2011), when they were touring in support of their fourth studio album
Blood Pressures. The transatlantic music relationship between American singer Alison "VV" Mosshart and British guitarist Jamie "Hotel" Hince, plus side projects (Mosshart is also in The Dead Weather with Jack White, Jack Lawrence and Dean Fertita), was not always convenient, so they've been absent from the music scene. The two even admitted that Although gone for a while, based on the sold out First Avenue show on Monday night, it was clear that the band was not forgotten.
As soon as the music started, you can see Alison jerking uncontrollably on stage, while singing "U.R.A. Fever", and Jamie, who is one of the best guitarists around, playing complicated chords with very little effort.
They played all the hits, of course, big crowd pleasers like "Black Balloon" (plenty of clap-along) and "Monkey 23", which closed out their set.
Setlist
|
As you can see from the setlist, "Hum For Your Buzz" was dropped for the encore. Instead, they substituted it with "The Last Goodbye". This was followed by "Last Day of Magic", which Alison accidentally disconnected her mic and was singing into a dead microphone (but she quickly resolved this). Finally, "Fried My Little Brains" ended the whole show, to a very satisfied audience. I've never overheard so many people in the audience exclaiming, "Wow, what a great show!" or "That was incredible!"
With all the excitement of seeing The Kills again, we're happy to report that the duo are indeed working on a fifth studio album for Domino Records. When that arrives, I'm sure we'll be doing this all over again.
