Bluegrass/Americana duo Mandolin Orange is currently touring in support of their latest Such Jubilee (Yep Roc), stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night.

Michaela Anne

Nashville's Michaela Anne opened up the show; her last stop in a series of five dates as support act. She played country songs in her 45-min set, including mostly songs from her latest Ease My Mind. I couldn't work out two of the songs, which I believe were either brand new songs or old obscure country songs.

Songs on her set, in this order: "I'm Not Her", "When You Wanted Me", Unknown ('Devoted Man?'), "Ease My Mind", "Bright Lights and the Fame", "Your Cheatin' Heart" (Hank Williams cover), "Lift Me Up", "That Winter", Unknown ('Sacramento Cardboard Sign?').

Anne tells us that she grew up listening to classic country songs, and one of her favorite was Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man". She wrote "Bright Lights and the Fame" as a response to that song.

Family is also really important to Anne, who encouraged her mother to go on tour with her. Her mom minded the merchandise... which had beer koozie, among the typical compact discs and vinyl.

It was a pretty terrific turnout for Mandolin Orange's third time in Minneapolis. You can tell right away that the duo was nowhere from around here - citing that 61° was "cold". It's practically short shorts and tank tops weather here.

Setlist

As you can see from their setlist, the new songs from Such Jubilee were played early on ("Little Worlds", "Daylight" and "That Wrecking Ball") and then midway in their set ("Rounder", "Blue Ruin", and "Old Ties and Companions"). Rounding out the rest of their show were familiar old songs from This Side Of Jordan and Haste Make / Hard Hearted Stranger.

The Chapel Hill duo (Andrew Marlin & Emily Frantz) were pretty talkative between songs. Marlin defended "That Wrecking Ball" simply as "not the Miley Cyrus song" and Frantz compared Minneapolis' quiet audience to their previous rowdy show in Madison, Wisconsin (which instantly got some 'boos' from the crowd).

For the encore, Michaela Anne was invited back on stage, and they decided to cover an old Jimmy Martin song called "God Gave You to Me". After Anne left the stage, the two closed out the night to "Until the Last Light Fades".
