Alt-blues rock quintet July Talk is currently on tour for their Juno-nominated self-titled album, stopping by the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis on Saturday, June 13th.
Opening up this 'triple rock' show was Mankato's Good Night, Gold Dust, featuring boy/girl singers (Laura Schultz and Colin Scharf), and played some tracks from their 2012 album Towards the Sun, including the closing title track.
New songs on their 30-min set included the single and b-side "California"/"Headlights", which was released earlier this year.
Next was Texas trio Purple, who seemingly brought with them about 40 fans from Duluth (about an two and a half hours north of Minneapolis). The story I got from one of the Duluth fan was that Purple had already built up a fan base in Duluth with some headlining shows.
True to their description of Andrew WK's bastard child, the band partied with songs from their album (409) (Play It Again Sam), but throwing in some brand new songs: "Birthday", "Backbone", and "Geneva" (misspelled as 'Geniva' on their setlist).
Highlight on their set was for "Thirteen", when moshing and dancing broke out.
Toronto-based July Talk had this 'beauty & the beast' quality to their music, with the rough growly male singer Peter Dreimanis (who sounds like a young Tom Waits) and the beautiful Leah Fay. The two often play with each other as they trade vocals throughout their set.
They had preview two brand new songs "You & Me and Rock 'n Roll" and the encore "Picture in Love" which sounded fantastic. If those new songs are any indications of where the band is going, I say they are heading in the right direction.
Prior to playing "My Neck", Fay told us the sad story about their very first Minneapolis appearance (16 June 2013 at the Nether Bar, with Grounders) was on Father's Day Sunday, and basically no one showed up. The bar owner dismissed the door person and told the band they didn't have to play... but he would still pay them. July Talk was determined to still play, even if it was just a private show for the owner.
Of course, it's a different story on Saturday night with plenty of fans singing and dancing to the band's bluesy songs.
Normally the band doesn't play encores, but with fans demanding one, the band came back on stage to play a new song "Picture in Love". Fay said that she had a bet with the band that she would have to pay everyone in the audience $100 dollar, but immediately declared bankruptcy.
