Los Angeles' Wand is currently on tour in support of their new album Golem (In the Red Records), stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Tuesday, April 7th.
Opening up the show was "deep-space" local band Phantom Tails. Their 30-minute set featured no live drummer, but plenty of synth and organ sound - but not "dance" music.

Grand Rapids' Heaters is a trio (Andrew Tamlyn, Nolan Krebs and Joshua Korf), and it was their first time in Minneapolis. I quite like their music, which is a lot of psych/fuzz and a little garage sound ... sometime reminding me of BRMC, especially when the guitarist and bassist switch position.
Heaters' latest release is called Solstice, out now on Dizzybird Records. Look for their new single "Mean Green" 7-inch for Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records.
I know coming up with band names are hard, but the Wand name is confusing with various other bands, including Canadian band Wand or Denmark's The Wands or Japan's Wands, just to name a few. According to the Canadian band, they were forced to change their name to avoid confusion. Derek "Still not from LA" Janzen writes on March 22nd: "The "real" Wand from LA want us to shut down this [Facebook] page now. It's been a nice 5 years of our little Wand but we've decided changing our name is the only option we have left."
This psychedelic band have been building up a garage/psych reputation opening up for Ty Segall (who loved them so much, he covered one of Wand's song, "Fire on the Mountain").
Wand's 45-min set included tracks from their latest Golem album, including "Self Hypnosis in 3 Days" and their new 'western' song "Reaper Invert". Songs were energetic, often filled with experimental feedback, thrash, distortion, and, in the middle of their set, lead guitarist/vocalist, Cory Hanson was doing his best shredding solo on the guitar.
They ended their set with "Generator Larping", from their 2014 album Ganglion Reef. They quickly came back on stage to declare one last song, a cover song. Which I believe was Amon Düül II' "Soap Shop Rock" according to what Hanson said on stage... but I was not familiar with the original song.
Wand's Golem is out now on In the Red Records. They are wrapping up their tour next week, ending at the Wayfarer in Costa Mesa, California.
