For the first time in America, Peter Hook & the Light are performing New Order's Low-Life and Brotherhood start to finish all across North America. We were lucky enough to enjoy the live rendition at the sold out Fine Line Music Café show in Minneapolis, last night.
Local British music fan DJ Jake Rudh played some music, getting fans pumped up for Peter Hook. We like the same bands and music, so it's not surprising to see him working with these artists. The next show that is on our radar is Rudh will be at the Ocean Blue/BNLX EP release party on November 29th.
If you're not familiar with the story of Joy Division, they were lead by singer Ian Curtis. After Curtis committed suicide, the rest of Joy Division (Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, and Peter Hook), went on to form New Order. While the band members were mostly the same, there is a definite shift in the direction of music... with New Order being on more synthesizer, happier, and more upbeat.
Peter Hook and his band The Light took the stage a close to 9:30pm, which was a lot earlier than what First Avenue's Twitter list Hook to be on at "10:20pm". And as advertised, Hook played selections from Joy Division. After the last Joy Division song was played, "The Eternal", the band went off stage for a quick ten minute break.
When they came back, they started into a few New Order songs and then worked their way to playing Brotherhood from start to finish. You can really hear the evolution of music - from somber, moody Joy Division songs to sunnier and uplifting New Order songs (even though some of their lyrics are hateful and dark!).
Hook is visibly annoyed by someone shouting out song requests. Several time he shot the fan down, "It's my show I'll play what I want", and later "Did you not read the f****ing poster? Shut up and let me get on with it." Hook is really unhappy with these distractions; you have to understand that the setlist they made (including all the guitar changes) were probably timed perfectly to fit into their allotted time on stage.... which in total would give us over three and a half hour of pure New Order and Joy Division classic songs. And who can argue with that?
The third set (after another brief break) would be for New Order's Low-Life album. I have to say that it felt like a live listening party, only you are sharing the room with fans, giving you feedback by singing or dancing along.
Personally, the highlight was the encore. For dedicated fans who stayed until the very end, we were treated to hits after hits ("5 8 6", "Shellshock", "True Faith", "Temptation", "Love Will Tear Us Apart"). For "Shellshock", Hook dedicated the song to Prince. Then after sing-along classics "True Faith" and "Temptation", Hook had one last statement to declare. He tells us that the drummer wanted them to play "Love Will Tear Us Apart", and he said, "NO!".... only the song started playing and Hook started to sing the beloved song. To end it, Hook took off his shirt and then said, "Tell Prince I said 'Hello'!" This was a very satisfying ending to a lengthy three set concert.
Peter Hook & the Light will be taking their Low-Life and Brotherhood show to Vancouver, Canada, next. They'll be playing the west coast in mid to late November, ending in Hawaii, which I suspect will be a lot warmer than Minneapolis.
